In the pretty little town of Lawrence there is not a more attractive’spot than the Peace Gardens. As a monument to the men of the district who fell in the Great War, these gardens fulfil their purpose with a tastefulness which compares very favourably with the more usual style of memorial. They have a very interesting association, too, linking them with the early days, as they stand on the spot formerly occupied by the old Commercial Hotel, where the five-in-hand coaches driving down from Central Otago formerly came to a halt. At the back of the hotel were Messrs Gray and Co.’s stables, where the horses were fed and groomed.
