HIGH-SPEED MOTORING.

MILE RECORD ESTABLISHED. “WIZARD" SMITH’S ACHIEVEM ENT. AUCKLAND, January 11. At Nincty-mile Beach this morning ‘'Wizard” Smith, in his Anzac car, covered a mile in 24 3-ssec, which is an Australian and New Zealand record. He attained a speed of 14G.341 miles an hour. The dash was made at low tide shortly after 11 a.m. to-day under splendid conditions. Only the Australian and New Zealand mile record was attempted, as the course was not laid out for a longer distance. The mechanic, “Don” Harkness, said the car touched 160 miles an hour. Mrs Smith, who was a spectator, confessed that she was worried as the engine had never been fully opened out before. She said that even “Wizard” did not know how powerful it was.
