After a discussion lasting till an early hour in the morning, the Auckland City Council resolved by 12 to 10 votes that expert advice should be sought in the selection of a city engineer, for which 75 applications had been received from Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere. This number had previously been reduced by the council to six, and a strong public protest bad been made through the press against the final selection being mado without expert advice. Mr Mawson, director of town planning, and Mr Furkert, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, will be asked to make a confidential report on the six applicants. The first New Zealand Congress of Esperantists will take place under the auspices of th New Zealand Esperanto Association at Wellington on January 17 and 18 next. The congress will be attended by club representatives, Universal Esperanto Association delegates, and esperantists from various parts of the Dominion.
