NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT. OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the Oamaru Jockey Club was held on Tuesday afternoon, Air W. Gardiner presiding. A communication was received from the Racing Conference asking if the club intended to apply for an alteration in the March dates. It was decided to adhere to the dates applied for, viz.: March 2- and 24 The Racine Conference further advised that South Canterbury desired to race on April 3 and 5, but Otautau objected, and 'asked the club if it had any objection to South Canterbury racing on March 2/ and Q 9 It was pointed out that if the dates were agreed to there would be races at Waimatc on March 20, at Camaru on March 22 and 24, and at Timaru on March 27 and 29. It was decided to object to South Canterbury racing on the lastnamed dates, as it was considered that five days’ racing in 10 days was excessive. Tire services given by the caretaker i connection with the improvements at the new racecourse were the subject of appre ciative comment, and it was decided grant him a bonus of £lO. NORTH OTAGO LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of delegates to the North Otago Lawn Tennis Association was held on Tuesday evening. Molkson were appointed selectors. , It was decided that the club teams consist of six ladies and six men, and that the club competitions commence on October 19. entries to close on October 12 Mr H. M'Dowell was appointed ladder secretary. It was decided that clubs supply pair of balls for each court in the club competitions. SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUETLY TO ANIMALS. Th" annual meeting of the North Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on M ednesday evening in the St. Luke’s Hall. Major Orbell preB 1 The president paid a high tribute, to the work of the late Sir George henwick, the founder of the Otago Society tor the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the secretary was instructed to write letters to Ladv Fenwick and the Otago Society sympathising with them in their great loss. , The secretary announced the third lite member of the society, who desired to remain anonymous The report and balance sheet were adopted as read. In speaking to the. report the piesident expressed appreciation of the work o ( the inspector during the past year, and thanked the public for reporting cases as much as was done. The membership was nearlv 700. and the society should have sufficient funds to carry on the work, though there were still about 200 in Nort 1, Otago who were sending to DunMr Hollands moved his notice of motion that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee to offer a prize for the be«t-kent tradesman's horse. —Carried. The retiring president thanked members for their assistance, and especially' the secretary for all she had done for the society. A comprehensive vote of thanks was also passed to St. Luke’s, the press, and to all who had assisted the society’ during the past year. The inspector stated that he had nothing to report for the month.

OAMARU RETURNED SOLIDERS’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Executive ®f the Oamaru Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Wednesday evening. Mr N. N. Fraser presided. Votes of sympathy were passed with Mr J. D. Forbes in the loss of his father, and with Mr J. Forrester in the loss of his mother. Mr M'Nulty reported having attended the annual reunion of the South African Veterans. The secretary reported on the visit of the delegates,to the conference at Dunedin in connection with the tendering of evidence at the proposed rehabilation of the disabled commission. The condition of the war crosses at the Oamaru Cemetery wag adversely reported on. Considerable correspondence in reference to the commission and with pensions was dealt with. HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE. At about 4.45 on Thursday morning the Oamaru Fire Brigade received a call from South Oamaru, where the residence of Mr Henry Keen was in flames. As the house was outside the borough bound-

ary, there was no water supply, and the building and a shed were completely destroyed. A sum of £220 in notes was destroyed, and two valuable retriever dogs in the shed were burned to death. The house and contents were insured in the National Office for £675.

ST. KEVIN’S COLLEGE. The discipline and progress of the boys at the barracks at St. Kevin’s College have been very favourably commented on, and prior to the break-up Lieutenantlolonel Thoms congratulated the school oa the keenness shown and the very good progress made by the boys who had had little or no previous training. Competitions were organised during the training course, No. 1 platoon proving the best platoon in the company, and Sergeant J. M’Veigh the best u.c.0.; while the prize for the most improved n.c.o. was won by Sergeant J. Curran. The prizes were duly presented by the principal of the college. Bro. Magee. NORTH OTAGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. Air Gu.v S. Wilson, the well-known judge from Ireland, has been appointed judge of the cut blooms, and Mrs Pitts (Waimate) and Mr Ewing (Oamaru) judges of the decorative classes at the Horticultural Society's Spring Show. THE TOWN CLERK. At the Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening the Mayor (Mr F. Crawshaw) reported that the town clerk had that night attained his majority in the service of tire Borough of Oamaru. Mr C. W. Kent had been appointed town clerk 21 years ago, and such a record must be very satisfactory and pleasing to him. It was a very creditable performance, and he congratulated Mr Kent on filling the office for such a long period during which hie had given every satisfaction to the councillors and ratepayers. Cr Frith supplemented the Mayor’s remarks and joined Ai heartily congratulating Mr Kent. Cr MDiarmid also added his tribute and congratulations. Mr Kent suitably acknowledged the compliment.

PERSONAL. Mr IV. R. Harris, Dominion organiser of the Farmers’ Union, who is at present in Oamaru. is making arrangements for organising the North Otago district. He is accompanied by Mrs Harris. Nurse Rogers, who is leaving for England towards the end of this month, will be employed on child welfare work. OTAGO AND OAMARU EGG CIRCLE. A meeting of members of the Otago and Oamaru Egg Circles, to discuss the question of export, was held in the Coquet Street Hall on Friday. Mr J. Hutton, president of the Otago Egg Circle, presided over a good attendance. Mr Hutton spoke of the unsatisfactory state of the market prices, and outlined the question of export, which, he thought, should be extensively increased from the stan dard at the present time. Air Fraser also gave an outline of the work of exportation, and the work done by the Otago Circle. Alessrs F. Brown, Government poultry expert, and Coker, Government egg grader, addressed the meeting, stressing the fact that up to the present on’y about one-third of the quantity of eggs exported last year were in sight for this year’s shipments. Air Brown stated that the large production of pulp and the preserving of eggs had hampered the export to a great extent. He also remarked that the guarantee made by the Government on eggs shipped to London was not fulfilling its object as the producer was only’ receiving 11 Id instead of Is 2d. The following motions were adopted:— “ That in the opinion of this meeting the attention of all poultrymen be drawn to the position of the industry, and that the export price will return to 2d per dozen more than the local market, and that an appeal be made to poultry-farmers to support export.” , “ That the New Zealand Poultry Association be asked to approach the Minister of Agriculture and ascertain if it is possigle for poultry-farmers to buy wheat at the price at which the wheat pool has sold for export.”

THE MARINE PARADE. Good progress continues to be made on the track around the cape, and a working bee on Saturday afternoon carried the last portion through to Bushey Beach. A sub-committee consisting of Alessrs B. T. W. Owen. W. R. Williams, J. Stevenson, and Freebury was appointed to submit a report on the cost of an alternative track past the powder magazine. LAWN TENNIS. The lawn tennis season was opened on Saturday afternoon under idea] weather conditions. The openings of the Meadowbank, Hall, and Wesley courts attracted large gatherings,and after the official ceremony’, those present enjoyed some very fine games. At the Aleadowbank courts, Mr Robertson (president) opened the courts, and also presented the club with a cup to be allocated as the committee thought fit. The Rev. Mr Harris, president of the Wesley Club, declared the courts open for the season. Among those present was the Rev. Mr Gina from the Solomon Islands. There was also a good attendance of players at the Hill courts, at which the season was commenced favourably. COUNCIL SEAT FORFEITED. Air E. A. Fox has received advice from the Audit Department that as the outcome of the purchase of stone for the Severn street wall from a company in which he is interested, his seat on the Oamaru Borough Council has become forfeit.
