LATE SIR GEORGE FENWICK

EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY. PUBLIC SERVICES EXTOLLED. Many public bodies and local societies have passed resolutions recording the outstanding public service rendered by Sir George Fenwick. While he was * very closely engrossed with business ties, he "’as ac t'vely associated with several societies rendering social and humanitarian service. He was also a member of other organisations, and these bodies all realise and have expressed their sense of the loss of a valued helper. Local public bodies have testified to Sir George's outstanding services and his high citizen-ship. Together these constitute a glowing tribute to the memory of the deceased, and, it is hoped, in some measure soften the loss which is felt by his sorrowing relatives and numerous friends.

In addition to the many resolutions, hundreds of personal messages have been received by relatives and by the Otago Daily limes and Witness Newspapers C ompany. These, in part, have come from men and women who have long enjoyed the tie of friendship with Sir George, while many others were from important business houses who have been associated " ith him in that sphere. Whatever the medium of association with the late gentleman was the measure of esteem was the same, and in the sad circumstances we can only acknowledge the widespread feeling of public and personal loss felt by the passing of the outstanding character whose first association with the Otago Witness was when he entered the office 70 years ago. PRESS TRIBUTES. WIDE RECOGNITION. Among the noteworthy tributes to the late Sir George Fenwick were the expressions of appreciation by the newspaper press of his career, and regret at the removal of a distinguished member of the New Zealand press. Our exchanges from all parts of the Dominion contain most pleasing references to Sir George and his many services to the press. His long and useful career in the newspaper world has been fully recognised by our contemporaries, and as they would occupy some pages of our space it is unfortunately impossible to reprint them. IMPRESSIVE BURIEL SERVICE. Amidst a wealth of the spring flowers that he loved so well and knew so intimately, and with the benison of brilliant and kindly sunshine, all that was mortal of the late Sir George Fenwick was laid to rest on Tuesday morning. The desire was for a quiet burial, devoid of pomp and circumstance, and of the public tribute that so many would willingly have paid at the passing of a personality of such native worth. Relatives and intimate personal friends, together with a large number of the employees of the Otago Daily Times and Witness Company, as well as representative citizens, were in attendance, and many others were present at St. Paul's Cathedral and at the graveside at the Southern Cemetery. The Rev. Canon Nevill read the burial service at the graveside, and, assisted by the Rev. W. Hardy Johnson, vicar of All Saints’ Church, conducted the service at the cathedral, where Mr E. Heywood played the “ Dead March ” from “ Saul."
