Although a good field will be sent on its way for the Easter Handicap on the opening day of the Metropolitan Club’s meeting, m all probability the bulk of the investments will be carried by two horses —Koi L or and Glideaway. who have been travelling in winning grooves, and are capable of chipping something from their present marks.

Of those on the limit Silk Thread can be written out, as he will probably need a race or two to get him into his best form, while in the.-case of Jackie Audubon, Kennerley has not had him back in his stable long enough to get him to win • a 4.29 mark. Good horse though he is. King Pointer does not make any particular appeal, and two who should beat him from the same mark' are The Abbey and Free Advice. In fact, the lastnamed is the most likely of the front lot to cause trouble to Roi L’or. She is a brilliant mare, of whom the best has not been seen.

Glideaway stands right out amongst those on 4.28. and in her present form it is hard to name one who will finish in front of her.

Among the back-markers. Author Jinks, gith the glamour of his recent brilliant performance at Tirnaru still on him, will carry the most support, but he will require to be more carefully nursed over the first mile than he usually is if he is to beat some of the smart and improving young horses in front of him.

Looked at from every angle the .finger of form points to Roi L’or and Glideaway with Free Advice the most likely to upset backers’ calculations.

HIGH NOON’S PERFORMANCES. The Ohio Stake at North Randall, feature race for aged trotters of the annual Grand Circuit meetings at the big Cleveland suburban racing plant, always can be counted upon to produce a great contest. It Brings together the greatest of the aged stake trotters, as a rule, and the 1928 renewal of the event was no exception (says an American writer). The Ohio was won by a horse which had been busy campaigning on both the half-mile and mile tracks, and which had not been saved with any particular race in view. This was the handsome whitelegged stallion High Noon. 2.41. owned by O. C. Belt, for years a Columbus patron of the harness racing sport, and he was driven by the veteran Charley Valentine, who gave a masterly exhibition of reinsmanship in landing the flashy-going stallion a winner. Drivers come and go. but “Vally” seems to improve as the years pass, and never seemed in better form than last season, one of the most successful in his long career as a trainer and driver of harness horses. The field started in the Ohio was one which comprised nearly all of the best aged stake trotters of the year. There was Doane 2.2}. world’s champion four-year-old gelding; Fullworthy 2.2. Lullawat 2.3}. Mina Dillon 2.2}, Trumpet 2.3}, Kashmir 2.34, Clara Bascom 2.4, and several others in addition to the Columbus stallion which was to gain all the honours when the • titanic contest was at an end. Lullawat won the first heat in 2.3}, with the track full of horses at the finish; then Fullworthy won the next in 2.31, with another traffic jamb at the wire. High Noon, judged by his finishing 8.6 in these two •heats, might be visioned as finishing well back, but such was not the case; it was almost a case of every horse in the race being a contender. In the third heat High Noon raced Fullworthy all the way and outfinished him through the home stretch, winning in 2,6}, the - first half having been trotted in I.IJ. The three heat winners then raced it off, High Noon setting the pace all the way and beating Fullworthy by two lengths in 2.91 trotting the final quarter in 30sec. Finishing the last two furlongs of a fourth heat at a two-minute gait shows not only the speed possessed by the stallion, but also the great courage which assisted him so materially in his campaign. Dwelling on the high lights of the campaign of High Noon during the past season necessitates a jump to the Kentucky State fair meeting at Louisville the week following the Grand Circuit meeting at Indianapolis. On the final day of the meeting the 2000 dollars stake for 2.15 trotters was staged, with the sensational Bennett Volo. Lullawat, and others opposing High Noon. The race goes into the records as one of the greatest ever trotted over a two-lap course; one in which,a new -world ? s record for a race heat over a half-mile track by a stallion was established. High Noon, with Bennett Volo and Lullawat’ the main contenders, won in three straight heats in 2.6}, 2.6}, and 2.9, ho other stallion ever having raced two as fast heats over a half-mile track as the first two by High Noon. In the first heat he trotted the three-quarters in 1.34, and in the second the last half in 1.2} and in the final he trotted the last half in 1.14 i the last quarter in 304 seconds. In the: annals of half-mile track race trotting this race stands out.

AMERICA’S .CHAMPION “BABY.” Since the inauguration of the Fox stakes has made the racing of two-year-old pacers fashionable (says an American exchange), the number of the juvenile sidewheelers racing has increased materially, many meetings, both mile and half-

milc tracks staging events for the youngsters One of the stars of the past season m 6 Melbert, 2.9 f, owned by Mr Philip B. Hill, of Bloomington, Ind., and trained and raced by the clever Indiana trainer, Bert Wallace, of Shelbyville, who has raced horses for Mr Hill years. The performances of this nlly in a campaign on both the half-mile tracks and the Grand Circuit the past season were such as to place her in a preferred position among the junior pacers of the season. The outstanding performance of Miss Melbert was in winning the pacing stake of the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Breeders at the Grand Circuit meeting at Indianapolis in September. A held of four started in this event, including Petroguy, who won the Indiana Stake at the trots at Lexington. After the latter had led well into the home stretch in the first heat, Wallace brought Miss Melbert fast on the outside and won in 2.9|. After she had set the pace in the second mile Petroguv beat her in a close finish in 2.11}, but in the final she again came from behind and outfinish?rl Petroguy, beating him a length, the official time of the final quarter being 30} seconds, but paced by the winner faster as she came from behind to win. The last half of this heat was paced in 1.3.}. The time of this race averaged faster than the heats in the ll,ooodol Fox Stake raced at the same meeting. Miss Melbert scored in a field of 14 baby pacers at the Ohio State Fair meeting at Columbus, the times over the halfmile track being 2.121. 2.14}, and 2.12}. At the Middletown. Indiana, meeting she defeated a big field in straight heats in the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Association Stake. In a similar event at Munice, Miss Melbert finished twice second to Petroguy in 2.15} and 2.141. At Tipton she beat a field of four in straight heats, pacing in 2.16} and 2.14}. During the season she started in six races, of which she won four, was once second, and once fourth, never being out of the money.

IN SADDLE AND SULKY.

Chef is smart over a mile in saddle. Acceptances for the Metropolitan Club’s Easter meeting are due to-day. Miss Adonis is believed to be in foal to Sungod, and so may not be kept to racing much longer.

Boy Blue is coming back to form, and should soon develop into a winner at one of the minor meetings. If the track at Addington is fast lor the Easter meeting it will be no surprise to find Koi L’or improving on his best time. On the form she showed at Invercargill last week C.vtheria looks to hold a chance in the mile saddle race at Lawrence on Saturday Tonic has proved that he can get to the end of a two-mile journey, and so will be one of the best backed runners in the Aiitumi Handicap at Addington.

Nelson M'Kinney has not finished winning yet. He is not improving in stamina, but he can step to a good mark over sprint distances.

Dick Logan is expected to. show improved form before long. He looks well on the front of the Belfast Handicap at Addington. Athalone is a good stayer, and he won so easily in his last outing that he looks certain to step inside the 4.35 mark be is on at present. Lingfield has struck her true form, and promises to retain it. If she does she will be a good winner for W. J. Tomkinson.

The back-markers in the trotting events at the Tuapeka and Beaumont meetings represent a better class than has- been seen on the courses for many seasons.

Logan Chief is slipping out to the front of the handicaps in his races, and he may yet win another race. It will not be over a two-mile journey, however. If Roi L’or is started in the Easter Handicap at Addington, he may share favouritism with Glideaway. who looks well after her trip to Auckland. Few horses have shown greater improvement than Shady Spot, who looks sure to improve on the best clip she has so far revealed.

Rap is an improved pacer who will win a two-mile race later on. He finished particularly well in his outing at the .recent New Brighton meeting. Glideaway is capable of touching a tighter mark than she has yet shown. W. J. Tomkinson has her in fine form, and should gather more money with her very soon.

Real Light’s supporters are dwindling because of his bad barrier manners. It is a long time since he went away right, but the first time he does he will be one of the first sierhted by the judge. Rose Marie has been a big disappointment to backers recently, and will probably drift in favour for her future races until she shows that she does in a race what she does on the track.

Re-al Home is likely to be well supported on the country' circuit at Easter. He is a six-year-old by Logan Pointer from Homeland, and is trained by -A. M'Leod.

Orphan Annie has a great private reputation. but she has not produced it yet with fllie colours up. She is a five-year-old by St. Swithin from a Silver Ribbon mare.

The successful southern pacer Wilma Dillon is in steady work at Invercargill, and in all probability will be a starter •at the Forbury Park Club’s winter meeting.

Lucky Harold appears to have lost a little of his speed, but he still has sufficient to win on the country circuit. Of his engagements at Easter he looks best in the Dunkeld Handicap at Beaumont. The Harold Rothschild gelding Thrift is a useful sort for the country circuit, and providing he goes away to his handi-

cap in the Dash Handicap at Lawrence on Saturday he should finish in a place. The bigger the course the better Slump likes it, and so he should show his best gait at Beaumont on Monday. He is a long-striding pacer who is forced to slow up on pronounced bends. Country King has been travelling in a winning groove this season, and is still fairly well placed in the handicaps. The half-brother to Queen’s Own should come up a good horse next season. Although he was beaten, Hinkler paced a . good race in the Melbourne Thousand. He got squeezed out at the start and dropped back last, but afterwards paced in fine style to finish in fifth place. Nelson de Oro gives every indication of being one of next season’s best winners. He has his full share of stamina, and from a 4.39 mark in the Wilkin Handicap at Addington he should go another good race.

Trampcrisp would only need to keep to a level gait to win the Preliminary Handicap at Addington on Saturday. The American trotter has a fine turn of speed, but he seldom carries it on an unbroken gait.

Engagement revels in deep going, and if the track is to’her liking at the Metropolitan Club’s Easter meeting , she will keep the others busy to beat her. Her gait is not an attractive one, but it gets her over the ground. Harvest Ch'ld has come on a lot this season, and it is only a matter of time before he will win a big two-miTe handicap. Providing the field fines down a little he should go a . good race in the Express Handicap at Addington. Cytheria has been racing consistently since, she won at Waikouaiti on New Year s Day. and the form she showed at Invercargill when she ran second to Country King prompts the belief that she will race prominently at the Beaumont meeting on Easter Monday.

The Logan Pointer gelding Monopole was travelling like -a winner half-way up the straight in his race at the New Brighton meeting, but broke just short of the post. He is a speedy four-year-old. i ut so tar has not been reliable in his races.

Farmer. Bill spends much of his energy in the air. and he will need to keep much closer to the ground if he is to w ! n a race - .Heis a raking big chestnut with few points of beauty about him. and he is never likely to show much improvement.

The Wyndham-owned sire Sungod has been brought well into the limelight recently by the performances of his representatives. Tn the New Biver Harness Trot at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting ]ast week the first four horses to pass the post were sired by him. Tlie 2 10S t P ror nising performer seen out at Lie South Otago meeting was Ambition, a shapely three-year-old by Nelson Bingen from Wild Cherry. Ambition carries the colours of the Dunedin owner, Mr W. M Lachlan, and she will eventually go into C. S. Donald’s stable.

By being placed on 4.26 in the Easter Handicap, Logan Park is now eligible to be nominated for the New Zealand Cup. The Logan Pointer gelding is, however, not a solid two-miler, and when the pace is on all the way he stops in the final furlong. He has a brilliant burst of speed, and although he is on a tight mark in sprint races his winning days are not by any means oyer.

J. D. Watts, who was recently disqualified by the stewards of the New South Wales Trotting Club in connection with the running of a horse named Frank Harvey, is appealing against the disqualification, and the opinion is expressed that he will have no difficulty in winning the appeal. Watts is one of the most successful trotting owner-drivers in New South Wales. He won the Sydney Thousand of 1923 wi.th Machine Brick in 3.19, a record for the race, and last year he won the Epping Thousand with Graceful Derby.

Actually from the standpoint of time there is nothing wonderful in a pacer going two miles in 4.354, but as the Richmond (Victoria) track is not considered to be fast, the crack pacer, Lord Lulu, was responsible for a brilliant performance on Melbourne Derby day. This fine horse was on 162yds behind in the Richmond Handicap, two miles, and on the limit was Count Abbey, who had won at two miles at a 2.22 gait. But Lord Lulu gathered up his field in great style, and, finishing strongly, won by a couple of lengths from Hamilvoyage, who was on 18yds. Lord Lulu’s time was 4.354. "Some time last year there was mention of the possibility’ of Lord Lulu coming across to New Zealand, but he remained in Australia. His recent performance suggests he would be a great proposition here, as he would not want to be a champion to win in a 4.36 class, and there is no telling how fast he would go on some of the New Zealand tracks. Fair Admiral, the winner of the trotter’s division of the Melbourne Derby only recorded 2.46 for the mile, and the opinion of Australian writers is that the square-gaited three-year-olds were a very ?TT° r 3 ot ’, Fair Admiral is by Admiral Wood, who was a good hose in New Zealand, and won a number of important stakes, included in them being the Auckland Trotting Cup in 1906. The Christchurch trainer, J. Bryce, started two in the race, the drive behind Admiral Wood being given to A. Julian. Rain came down in torrents, and the track was a sea of slush when the horses started. Covered in mud the drivers finished the race. Admiral Wood winning easily. He was on 144yds behind, and he was the last horse to win the cup under the yards system of handicapping. No sooner had the race finished than a storm broke and rain, intermingled _with sharp flashes of lightning, made it impossible for the programme to continue, and the remaining events were postponed till the followin'* day.

CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By Observer.

Writing a week before opening day it is easy to be very much astray in predictions regarding the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. At this period many owners nominate their horses at more than one meeting, and some uncertainty exists

at present concerning the programme of several racing teams. It is certain that the first acceptances for the leading handicaps will be reduced substantially at the next payment, but sufficient horses will remain to furnish really good contests. The Champagne Stakes and the Challenge Stakes have excellent prospects, while the nominations for the minor events are ample assurance of success. Reremoana, who heads the list in the Great Easter Handicap, is one of the doubtfuls, as he is engaged in the Auckland Easter Handicap. He is very partial to Riccarton, where he usually races well, bu ; against that there is the argument that the field for the Auckland race does not look strong. Commendation is reported to be retired for the season. In the Shade and Bright Glow have had their Auckland engagements continued, so it looks as if they may not come south, while Seatoun is another who may do Auckland. Moa Bird is another doubtful, as a six furlong handicap at Feilding mv.y offer better inducements. Royal Saxon, Black Duke, and Meadow Lark are engaged at Riverton. Pink Note and Amor will be at Riccarton, but as they figure in the Sockburn Handicap on the first day they are doubtfuls for the Great Easter. Similarly, Hurly Burly may decline the Great Easter in favour of the Autumn Plate, in which the field will be.much easier.

With so many of the first acceptors claiming other engagements it is posssible that the Great Easter Handicap will suffer considerable shrinkage. Reremoana, however, still may come to Riccarton. He won this race last year, and must have a chance again, in spite of his unsuccessful record this season. Seatoun is another who may come south, and he will be a welcome visitor, as he appears to be coming back to hi s best form, which was good. In his case the Sockburn Handicap is an alternative engagement on the first day. Silver Paper is a pronounced favourite at present for the Great Easter. He is a brilliant three-year-old, and horses of that age are hard to beat at this period. Cimabue is a likely sort, as he can run out seven furlongs well. Booster was-second last year, and cannot be ignored. Paperchase has failed lately, but she has been galloping well enough to have a chance. Rin Tin Tin and Gay Sonnet may add interest to the contest. In the meantime, however, the favouritism of Silver Paper seems justified. The Great Autumn Handicap looks certain to thin out. Commendation and Mendip are a couple of North Islanders who are said to have finished their racing for the season, while Bright Glow and In the Shade seem more likely to race at Auckland. Seatoun is another whose plans are unsettled, but he may be found at Riccarton. Footfall, of course, has been scratched already.

Even though there may be a number of withdrawals, the Great Autumn field will be quite useful. Rapier is a strong favourite, and after his two recent weight fof-age successes, nothing else was to be looked for. He is at the top of his form, and he will keep his opponents very busy. He appears to hold Nightmarch quite safe, although it is possible the three-year-old will be improved by his two races. Nightmarch should be the equal of Pink Note, on their Dunedin Cup running, so it looks as if Pink Note was another who was held by the top weight. Count Cavour is quite a different proposit’on. After a number of failures, he was dropped in the weights and then showed a return of form by running a great race in the Trentham Gold Cup, a repetition of which will enable him to beat Rapier in the Great Autumn, as he has a pull of 131 b in the weights. Beau Geste is a possibility, also Seatoun. if he makes the trip south, while Amor’s winning form over 11 furlongs at Trentham was very encouraging. Rapier is entitled to favouritism, as he is a solid customer, blit on figures Count Cavour reads the most likely winner. It is against him that he has raced badly more than once this season, but the prospect of a track to his liking is a factor worth noting. Footfall has been thrown out of commission. He showed signs of soreness, and G. Murray Aynsley decided not to risk a breakdown. The Autumnus gelding will be blistered and spelled for about a year, after which he will be tried again. Full Feather is off the scene at present, as a result of lameness. It may not be serious, but it will keep him from racing in the meantime.

Pangolin was very sore after racing at Waimate, and it has been found necessary to give him a spell. Red Heckle disappointed his connections at Trentham, and he will do no more racing this season. With a spell, however. he should come back to show improved form as a four-year-old. R. Longley has recommissioned the three-year-old colt Proud Knight after a spell of about two months. His retirement was necessitated by a mishap, for which he has made a good recovery. The colt, who is raced for the estate of the late E. Fox, has given evidence of stamina, and he may develop into a good performer next season. Mrs Fox and her daughter left recently for a trip to Great Britain, but this will make no difference 5 to the programme of Proud Knight, who will be kept in work and raced during their absence.

Mr G. Gould’s two-year-old Juniper, by Kilbroney from Judith, is being kept going in useful work in view of Easter engagements at Riccarton. He is an attractive galloper, who gives promise of staying well next season. The two-year-old filly Dutch Money, by Paper Money from Dutch Clock, is enjoying a spell, and she will not be taken in hand again until it is time to prepare her for three-year-old engagements. Sfie showed a lot of speed in the spring, and she should make a good class sprinter next season.

The imported horse Honeycomb, who has been spelling for some time, will rejoin W. G. Hobbs’s team next month, and he may do some racing before the end of this season.

Amorist had to be spelled after his return last month from the Dunedin meeting, where he stripped the skin off one of his legs when he fell in a hurdle race. He has made a good recovery, and R. Longley hopes to have him out among the hurdlers at Easter.

Bonomel, who is engaged in the second day hurdle race at Riccarton, has been off the scene for a long time as a result of going wrong. He has done some work lately on his owner’s station, and as he appears to be sound Mr H. Dampier

Crossley may have him in training at Riccarton again very soon. W. G. Hobbs has broken in a couple of yearling colts, one by Shambles from Palestrina, and the other by Nightraid from Week End. He has made a start also with a third youngster, by Tea Tray from Bon Avis, a Boniforjn mare who did not live up to the high expectations of her owner when she was training. Quickplunge, a three-year-old filly by The Ace from Brave Deed, has been sold by Sir George Clifford, and she is now an inmate of G. Reed’s stable. Starflight, who rejoined G. Murray Aynsley’s team recently, appears to have benefited by his long spell, as he is quite sound. He should race well, if he trains on. as he is a good galloper. Waterlow has had to be eased up as a result of going sore. This is bad luck, as she was in good order. Mr J. Beale has acquired the lease of the two-year-old filly by Grandcourt from Sequinctte. She will be kept to hack work through the winter, and will commence racing in the spring. The jubilee meeting of the Hororata Racing Club, which was held on Saturday, was a great success in every way. The weather was ideal and was responsible for a large attendance, the club’s city patrons turning out in strong force to augment the crowd of country supporters. Mr T. Ward, who owned and rode Royal to victory in the first Hororata Cup. was present, as was Mr G. Wittv. M.L.C., who witnessed the meeting held 50 years ago. Saturday's meeting attracted good fields, and the racing was above tue usual standard. There was a large increase in the totalisator revenue, and altogether the meeting provided evidence of .-■ -itve of prosperity in the affairs of the club. Mr J. Bridges officiated as starter in the galloping events at Hororata on Saturday. He controlled the fields well, and sent them off in good line, his work throughout the day reaching a high standard.

Mr J. E. Henrys was among the visitors to the Hororata meeting, taking close note of the form as a preliminary to declaring his handicaps for minor events on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting. Amourette, the winner of the Trial Plate at Hororata, had not previously shown mufh form, but she is a smart galloper, and now that she has made a start she may go on to further successes. Her sire, Psychology, is an imported horse by Tracery, while her dam, Lovelock, by Martian from Lovelorn, is a sister to Nones and Menelaus, two good class performers.

Starshooter was unlucky in drawing outside position at the start of the Trial Plate at Hororata, and in a field of 13 this settled his chance. The dve-furlong barrier is on a bend, and the track is narrow. As a result, Starshooter was on • very rough ground, and he stumbled badly at the rise of the barrier. He will do much better very soon. Kentish Lady, who filled second place in the Trial Plate at Hororata, has a fine turn of speed, and later on she may stay on much better, as she is bred on good lines. Her sire. Tonbridge, is an imported son of the Derby winner, Pommem (son of Polymelus), while her dam, Warstar, by Maniopoto from Lady Lucy, is a half-sister to Star Lady, the dam of Star Stranger. Aberfeldy registered an attractive performance when be won the Bangor High Weight Handicap. He has benefited greatly from his recent racing and he will be in first-class order to start the jumping campaign.

Moratorium showed good form when he ran second in the Bangor High Weight Handicap. He was ridden very patiently in the early stages, and was giving away too much start over the last two furlongs, the result being that he was a stride too late in overhauling Aberfeldy. Chide gained many admirers by the style in which he won the Hororata Jubilee Cup. He lost several lengths through interference soon after the start, and when he made his effort in the back stretch he was rushed up so quickly that many horses would have failed to run on. It made no difference to Chide, however, as he held his opponents off without much effort over the last furlong. It was an impressive performance which left little room to doubt his stamina. It may be found, in fact, that staying is his real game. His sire, Paladin, has left some stayers, while his dam. Reproachful, is by Bonny Glen (a great stayer by Stepniak) from Lady Disdain,'who produced Bee and Snub, both good stayers. In the meantime. Chide looks a good prospect for long races next season. Caterpillar won a double at Hororata, and in each of her races she showed a fine burst of speed, while she hung on gamely in the last bit while under pressure. She may never get beyond sprint races, but she will win more stakes, as she is a brilliant galloper.

Arch Arrow has-raced with wonderful consistency in his recent outings. He showed improved stamina in winning the Brachendale Handicap, running out the seven furlongs very solidly. First Raid disappointed his admirers in the Brachendale Handicap. It was thought that the turns on the Hororata course would suit him, but he faded out badly at the finislw The Easter meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will be commenced on Saturday. The first day’s acceptances are not available yet, but the fields are certain to be large. The pacer John Appear, who has been held on lease by Messrs Hargreaves and Dawson, of Dunedin, has been purchased by Mr M. Dawson. The three-year-old trotter Great Way was recently purchased by a patron of C. S. Donald’s stable. He failed to show up at New Brighton, but he may be in better order for the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Forbury Park in May. Prince Pointer was nominated for the Sydney Thousand, and was handicapped at 3.21. An effort was made to secure P. Riddle as his driver, but this failed, and eventually it was decided to cancel the trip. The New Brighton pacer Becky Mine has been racing very consistently. She is on the improve all the time, and she should make a good two-miler next season.

There has been very little work on the local tracks during the past week on account of rain, but the weather now seems to be more settled.

The American trotter Trampcrisp would not settle to his work at the start of his race at New Brighton, but once he got going he showed good form. When he fr£m eS hi 1 H OWn he . The Riccarton representative, Aberfeldy. Zn.W ■ F gh W ? ight Handicap fo'r " riders on the opening day from w ' Hls neare - st opponent was Elicit. He was not produced on the second day. lhe Hawera-trained Vivo was one o the last to finish on the opening day, but although there was about twice as many runners on the concludin'* day she never gave any of them a look-

There were five runners in the New Z land St. Leger after The Warden, who had an engagement later in the day, was taken out. First Ruler was outclassed. Toxeuma pulled very hard in front for the first mile and a-quarter, where his rider (Harold Young) let him go. He g , ot a br eak , but failed to respond at the iinisa, when Concentrate put in a good tin, and scored with little to spare, loxeuma beat Concentrate in the Great oi them Derby. The success of Concentrate, locally owned and trained, was very popular. He is a full-brother to the New Zealand Cup winner Oratrix, by Kilbroney Oratress. Red Heckle, who does not look a very robust customer, managed to beat High halutin for third money. Eaglet, top weight in the Plunket Nursery, did well to dead-heat with Disorder, one of Sir George Clifford’s team, who was making her first appearance. The Auckland filly was conceding her opponent 321 b. Valpre, a stablemate of Reremoana, did best of the others. Bright Glow was unlucky enough to act as runner-up in the Thompson Handicap for the second year in succession. She was beaten by Paganelli. previously regarded as -a sprinter. He drew inside position, anc) won from end to end. The top /eights, Pegaway and Rapier, did best of the others. Last year’s winner, Joy King was among the unplaced division, also his stablemate, Rapine, and Hynanna. During the season Paganelli has proved himself a good winner by placing the Feilding. Taranaki, and Jacksen Stakes to his owner’s credit.

In winning the North Island Challenge Stakes, Gaj’ Ballerina defeated two previous winners of the race in Reremoana and Gascony, who were the filly’s nearest attendants at the finish. Rin Tin Tin was in the field, but he was outclassed. Commendation was another that failed. Excepting the Wellington Stakes, when Honour was in the field, Gay Ballerii has been unbeaten in the Dominion. She made a trip to Randwick in the spring, and finish ' third in the Gimcrack Stakes. Like Paganelli she is one of the Lord Quex breed. After the race she was sold to Mr H. G. Kirkpatrick, of Sydney, who is on a business visit to the Dominion and attended the meeting. at Riccarton a few weeks back, for 2000gns. She was offered to a local agent a few weeks back for half that amount. She will take part in the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Manawatu, also the Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. She will forfeit her engagements at Randwick. Later on she will join another New Zealander in Ring Boy at J. "'ruskett's establishment at Caulfield. Zippor, who won the Silverstream Handicap. a mile race for hacks, from end to end, is a full-brother to Magna Charta. Another Hastings-trained one in Goodwill was his nearest attendant at the finish. This pair were jeparated by Rabbi on the secoi day. Goodwill, trained by T. F. Quinlivan. paid a great price both days. _ First Ruler was unsighted .'ith the minimum weight, which goes to prove liis chance in the St. Leger was nil. Eaglet had the maximum (9.7) in the Pacific Handicap. She was withdrawn in favor’’ of Polyxena, . who could only get fourth. Ceremony won well with top weight, repeating the performance of his stablemate. Enisode. with the same weight in .the same race 12 months ago. The consistent but unlucky Equitant was runner-up. Night Lad did not run up to his first day’s form, and evidently could do with a let up. Ceremony has'B.s in the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Manawatu, and if Gay Ballerina could give him 61b and. a beating is entitled to it. Pink Note made his only appearance in the Autumn Handicap. He ran a great race, but was beaten by Amor at a difference of 181 b. The latter ran in under punishment, and continued to do so. His rider, C. Eastwood, got out of it well. The pace was on all the wav, and that steadied Pegaway with his 9.6. Tresham showed a glimpse of his old form by getting third, but White Fang was expected to do better with only 7.7 on his back. The trainer of Silver Paper showed good judgment,in taking him out of the Thompson Handicap and reserving him for the

Suburban Handicap. He carried a lot of money on the totalisator, and beat the three place-getters in the Railway Handicap on the opening day. She was placed in a hurdle race at Wanganui, and as fortunate enough to get in with the "’elsfit. The handicapper raised bee IHIH °n the second day. Bright Glow, runner-up in the Thompson Handicap, had only Mendip, also trained at Hawera, to beat in the Prince of Wales’s Handicap. Blimp, winner of the Foxton, Woodville, and Napier Cups, was sent out favourite. It must have been his off day, as. although he was racing on his own course, he ran last. Mothplane (Warplane—Dolly Fisher) proved the best of the Autumn Plate lot, winning from the Trentham representative, Ex Dono.

Trentham form pointed to Goodwill and Second Thought in the spring hack handicap, but both failed to get in the money. Bernera, trained at Hastings, won from two Trentham-traincd ones in Endorse and Australis.

Gay Ballerina had no difficult” in beating her five opponents in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. Next beat was Polyxena. in receipt of a stone.

Commendation ran last in the Awapuni Gold Cup, and it does not Ictok as if he will ever come back. Over the shorter distance it was thought Nightmarch would account for Rapier, but the latter won nicely. None of the fancied ones in the Telegraph Handicap got in the money. The winner. Benzora, hails from Hawera. He is a pretty good snrinter when he is right. Atholspear. winner of the Te Matai Hack Handicap, may win again at Wairarapa at Easter time. AUCKLAND TOPICS. By Digger. The Auckland Easter carnival opens at Ellerslie on Saturday, and from present indications it will be a fine meeting. The recent rain has rendered the track nice and easy, and splendid conditions will be in order if it does not continue too long. J. W. Cathro left for Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Friday taking the maiden Hiata. by Hyllus—Waihapai. Greatthings are expected of this three-year-old, whose outings so far have brought him into the boom, although he has not won. E. Manson has gone across to ride him. T. Green, who is to ride Honour at Randwick, and Mr F. D. M‘Liver, who has Patadawn in the Sydney Cup, were also passengers by the Ulimaroa. Vallar is the prime favourite at Ellerslie for the Easter Handicap. On Thursday he galloped a mile in great style, and led Corinax throughout in good time. Corinax finished splen. dly. and he, t"O, is in heart. It is in Vallar’s favour -,s an early tip for the big mile that he is at home in any weather conditions. and is perhaps the best beginner in Auckland. Lightweight W. H. Jones returned from Svdnev last week, and he has again settled at Ellerslie. His services will always be in demand on account of his weight, and he is likely to be Vallar’s Easter Handicap pilot. S. Hodge has shifted his team from Avondale to Takanini, a training ground that is becoming increasingly popular. Imperial Prince and Professor, two promising two-year-olds in Hedge’s team, will do no further racing this season. They are both big colts, and should be all the better for an easy time this season. Kawini was brought to Ellerslie on Thursday and schooled over four hurdles in a finished manner. The steeplechaser is in fine condition, and looks a good prospect for the Brighton Hurdles. A young hurdler Komak won attractively at Paeroa, and is in some demand for the Brighton Hurdles. He seems to be a good stayer, but lack of experience may beat him over the bigger hurdles ■at Ellerslie. Toxeum was the first visitor to reach Ellerslie for the Easter meeting. He looks none the worse for his two races at Trentham, and should again extend the opposition in the St. Leger Stakes. I have the opinion that Prodice was not at her very best at Christmas time, and that she is capable of doing better. F. Loom!) has not produced her of late, but if she comes up fit next week I expect her to go close to winning both the Oaks and St. Leger. despite the presence in the latter event of Concentrate. Since being unluckily beaten at Pukekohe Hyde Park has trained on splendidly. He is a very useful horse who will relish the easing of the track conditions, and only further bad luck can keep him out of the money at the Easter meetings. A two-year-old that made a good imEression at Pukekohe was Motere, by ord Quex —Lovematch. He is in the same stable as Supremacy and is expected to race well in handicap juvenile events at Easter. When Black Maire won at Te Aroha he showed that he was an improved horse. Since then he has not appeared in pubb’c, but he should be among the runners at Ellerslie, where he might again prove dangerous.

Up to date Indolent has been an unlucky hack. He was in a place at Paeroa, but was overlooked by the' judge, and in

addition it may be mentioned that he should have won outright. Indolent is always going at the end of his races, and his turn must come soon. Envoy is commencing to race somewhere near what is expected of such a well-bred one. His last few starts have shown that he is on the up-grade, and he should appreciate the big tracks at Ellerslie and Avondale after racing on the country circuit. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. SOUTH OTAGO TROTS. Saturday, March 23.

The South Otago Trotting Club held its inaugural meeting in fine weather, and there was an attendance of over 1000, including a number of visitors from Dunedin and Southland. The gate takings were over fIOO. It was the first meeting held in the district after a lapse of 18 years, when the Clutha Hack Racing Club- provided a mixed card of racing and trotting. Over a-quarter of a century ago the district held a totalisator meeting in the days when a legal permit was unnecessary. A walk round the track found it providing fairly good going except on a few patches that required filling after the recent heavy rains. There are good possibilities about the course, as some filling and toj-dressing would make quite a serviceable grass track with a circumference of a little less than five furlongs.- The club has a strong membership, and intends to make an endeavour to supply a satisfactory track in the future. The fixture was attended by a good sporting spirit, and the card provided some interesting racing which should help to arouse the enthusiasm necessary to make a success of the future and establish the club’s meetings as amongst the notable fixtures of the season. The spice of betting, held to be necessary to racing, was conspicuous by its absence, but hopes are held that at some not too remote period a totalisator permit may be obtained.

The card was very fittingly opened by the win of a locally-bred and owned horse. Mr D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., made the presentation of the trophy attached to the South Otago Trotting Cup, and Mrs W. M‘Cormick (the donor) made the presentation of the gold-mounted whip. Mr S. V. White (Mayor of Balclutha) made the presentation of the trophy attached to the Melton Handicap. Mr W. F. Dunne acted as honorary starter, and the officials of the club got the card off with commendable punctuality. The general impression of the meeting was very favourable, and on all sides expressions of approval were heard from those who participated in the day’s sport. Results:— CRESCENT HANDICAP,

Of 18sovs and gold-mounted whip presented by Messrs Blizon and Smart. Class 4min. One mile and a-half.

SUCCESS OF WOMEN OWNERS. LONDON, March 22. The Grand National Steeplechase Handicap, of 8215sovs, about four miles 856 yards, resulted:— Gregalach, eh g, by My Prince—St. Germaine - 1 Easter Hero, by My Prince—Easter Week 2 Richmond 3 Twenty-six started. Won by six lengths; Richmond a bad third.

THE RACE DESCRIBED. LONDON, March 22. There was unusually good going in the Grand National. Every horse cleared the first hurdle, 10 fell at the third, and there were about 22 standing up the first time round. Seven passed the judge, but three others completed the course. One broke its neck. There were several bad spills, but the jockeys were not hurt. At the fourth jump the Easter Hero, was out alone, Sandy Hook and Richmond following. Easter Hero, continuing to jump magnificently, led throughout until the canal brook the second time round, which he jumped alongside Richmond. Sandy Hook was then third, but fell at the next jump. Easter Hero drew away, but Gregalach became prominent, coming strongly and jumping extraordinarily well, with an apparently good chance of winning. Easter Hero entered the straight first, and led at the penultimate fence. Gregalach, in full running, challenged, and cleared the final jump well ahead. Mrs Gemmell owns Gregalach. There is a remarkable- coincidence in women winning the Lincolnshire and Grand National double.

Easter Hero is owned by the American, Mr Whitney. The third horse, Richmond, is owned by Mr M'Alpine.

THE RACE LOSING FAVOUR. LONDON, March 23. Despite the fear that the colossal field would spoil the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Grand National was a successful race. It is notable that the longpriced winners of both the Lincoln Steeplechase and the Grand National Steeplechase belonged to women. Mrs Gemmell, the owner of Gregalach, won £13,0(10. About a dozen horses fell at the open ditch in front of the third fence, 29 negotiated the canal fence, and two fell at the brook.

The Morning Post learns that despite the unwieldy field the conditions of the race will not be altered.

The contrary view is that of Mr Trevor Wignall, who, in the Daily Express, says that owners and winners are unanimous in declaring that the Grand National is developing into a farce, and is no longer a race. Unless something is speedily done the National is a doomed race. Nowadays it is not even a reasonable gamble, and the attendance has grown smaller every year.

The Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase was first run in 1839, and the'Aintree course is credited with being the stiffest steeplechase course in the world. This year particular interest was taken in the race on account of the American horses taking part. Previous winners during the past 10 years are:—l92o. Troytown, 7yrs, 11.9; 1921, Shann Spadah. lOvrs, 11.7; 1922, Music Hall, 9yrs, 11.8; 1923. Sergeant Murphy, 13yrs, 11.3; 1924, Master Robert, llyrs, 10.5; 1925. Double Chance, 9yrs, 10.9; 1926, Jack Horner, 9yrs, 10.5; 1927, Sprig, lOyrs, 12.4; 1928, Tipperary Tim.
