GROWING HYACINTHS IN WATER.
In many homes where forced bulbs and flowers are out o’ the question sweet hyacinths grown in glasses may serve to brighten the room and window in early spring. The hyacinths chosen should, for preference, be single ones, which have perfect bulbs, and they should be.placea in soft rain water, not hard water out of the pipes. The water should nearly touch the base of the bulb in each case; there should not be actual contact. A few pieces of charcoal ought to be placed in the water to keep it sweet. Hyacinths in glasses require to be kept in a cool, dark cupboard or similar place for a month, and even longer, if the r<sots have not developed. When well-rooted the transition from darkness to light must be graduated. Afterwards all possible light should be given, but a cool position chosen for the plants in prefer ence to a heated one. When the time comes that support is required by the flower, spikes, it is best to use the im proved modern supports which clip the glass.
