A daring attempt to steal a large sum of money from an office girl was made in Auckland about 3 o’clock on a recent afternoon by a young man at the rear of the Victoria Arcade Buildings in Fort street. The young woman was on her way to the bank to deposit a considerable sum of money, which was in a leather bag she was carrying. As she was passing the rear entrance to the Burlington Tea Rooms a man rushed up and snatched the bag from her hand. The girl, although surprised, had the presence of mind to seize the thief by the lapels of the coat. She shrieked for help and as she did so the young man forced his way into the corridor, with the girl still clinging to his coat. Compelling the girl to release her grip, he broke free and disappeared up the steps at the rear, of the building. A number of men in the vicinity rushed to the assistance of the girl and gave chase, but the bag-snatcher could not be seen. In his excitement to get away he dropped the bag containing the money. This was returned to the girl.
