—One London building contains 120 fast-moving lifts for the use of customers and staff.

Hr i, ’ Holland, M.P., has received the following telegram from the Minister of Mines in reply to his communication urging an immediate investigation into the cause of the short time worked at the State mines: I have made inquiries and am advised that all gasworks stocked up immediately prior to Christmas, and are postponing further large orders owing to the near approach of the end of their financial year. This, together with lack of other -outside orders, has been the principal cause of the stoppages at the State mines. The department has made strenuous endeavours to obtain sufficient orders to enable the mines to work full time, and sufficient orders are now in hand to keep them working full time next week.

It has been stated that a total area of about 20 acres near Auckland has been put down in tobacco this season by pioneers of the new industry (says the New Zealand Smallholder). There are certainly one or two nice patches to be seen, and it will be interesting to note the result of this season’s efforts fin this line. One of the crops noted is that on the property of Mr E. J. Bendall, West Coast road, Glen Eden. This crop comprises 4000 well-grown plants, which appear to be in excellent order. They have grown freely, and the yield from this area should be fairly substantial.
