GUILTY OF PERJURY.

NAPIER, February 19. In the Supreme Court to-day. before Mr Justice Ostler, James Humphries was found guiltv of perjury, and was remanded for sentence. The case for the Crown set out that in a U il action in Dannevirke the accused went into the witness box and swore that he had paid to the plaintiff in the action £5O on a certain date, and another £oo three days later. The Crown contended tha'. the second sum of £5O had never been paid, and that the accused’s statement was absolutely false. Several witnesses were called in support of the charge. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was unrepresented by counsel. He did not ask any questions, give evidence, or address the jury.
