DEATH OF A NURSE.
WELLINGTON, February 18. Tire inquest was continued to-day on 'the death at the Porirua Mental Hospital of Edith Mary Paynter, a nurse at the institution, who died there on February 10 following an illness after being attacked by a Bcrstal girl. Nurses gave evidence alleging that the deceased was neglected, being given no food and being made to work when not fit to work; also that she was locked in her room. The evidence for the defence was that the deceased was being treated for hysteria, that the treatment was proper and usual in such cases, that she was given plenty of the right kind of food, that she wag locked in her room to enable her to have peace and quietness, and that she was never forced or made to do any work if Unwell. What sire did was light work, and that was done with a view to getting her mind off her illness and taking an interest in her surroundings. She never made any complaint to the authorities at not being properly treated.
The inquest was adjourned till to-mor-row.
