The annual election of school committees has been fixed to take place on the night of Monday, April 22. The executive secretary of the Otago Area, New Zealand Alliance, wrote to the Taieri County Council last week urging that, in connection with the Chalmers Licensing Committee election arrangements should be made in order to save the cost of an election, for only five nominations—three representing. the moderates and two the no-license party. It was agreed to endeavour to arrange a conference of the local bodies in the electorate and representatives of the moderate and no-license parties to give effect to the suggestion.
It was reported at Friday’s meeting of the Otago Education Board that the number of certificated relieving teachers on the board’s list was 66, of whom 18 were unemployed this month. At this time last year there were about 90 relieving teachers available, and towards the end of the year through gradual absorption it was necessary to employ a number of uncertificated teachers It seemed fairly certain that in about two or three months’ time the board would not have sufficient relieving teachers.
