CROQUET
OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The annual Otago croquet championship tournament was opened on the Punga Croquet Clubs greens. Roslyn, on Wednesday morning in beautiful weather Ihe number of entries received totalled 140, constituting a record. The players comprise a representative gathering, many having travelled from Christchurch, Balclutha. Gore, and Invercargill. The playing conditions were excellent, and the standard of play was of an unusually high order.
The president of the Punga Club (Mrs J. M'Donald), in extending a welcome to the players) expressed the hope that their stay in Dunedin would be a pleasant one. Reference was made to the lack of an Otago association, due chie.fy to the widespread nature of the district and the dis tance the country dubs were from one another and from Dunedin, which would, of course, be the centre. This fact made interclub play almost impossible, except between the local clubs, and perhaps Balclutha. It was hoped, however, to overcome these difficulties, and that an Otago association would be formed by next year. If such a controlling body could be formed, Mr D. Tannock, superintendent of reserves, assured them that at least six full-sized lawns would be available at Logan Park.
