CHRISTCHURCH, February 19. Wheat is inclined to be weaker, and sales have taken place at 5s 7d a bushel on trucks for Tuscan. Farmers are now offering fairly heavily, and some are prepared to accept the easier quotations rather than wait for a hardening The bulk of the samples coining to hand are up to milling grade. The warm drying weather of the past fortnight has hardened up the grain, and the proportion of immature stuff in future samples is likely to be substantially reduced. Fowl , wheat is quoted at 5s 6Jd, f.0.b., sacks . extra, for prompt delivery, and 5s 7d for spread delivery. , Oats have eased further since the weekend, and sales of A Gartons have been i made at 3s 4d, f.0.b., s.i., and B?s at • 3s Id. ■ Purchases have been made from i farmers at 2s 9d on trucks, for A’s. The ■ absence of any outside outlet is depressi ing the market.

Chaff, peas, cocksfoot, perennial ryegrass, and clovers show no change from last week’s quotations. The ryegrass market is firm, but the absence of a northern demand is restricting speculation in all classes of small seeds.

As a rule at this period of the year speculation is fairly lively in the potato market, but at the moment an unusual quietness prevails. The market quotations for March-April remain at £4 17s 6d a ton, but there is little business at this figure. On the other hand, inquiries from the north at £4 15s have been received, but merchants cannot deal with farmers to allow a margin on this figure. Growers will not discuss any price less than £3 15s on trucks. JulySeptember deliveries are quoted at £5 15s a ton, f.0.b., s.i. Onions are now commencing to come in, and the quality is fairly good. From £5 10s to £5 15s, on trucks, is quoted for prompt deliveries, and £5 for main crops. WALLACETOWN MARKETS. INVERCARGILL, February 19. There were good yardings at the weekly Wallacetown stock sale yesterday, when there was a fair attendance of buyers. The fat stock market showed a tendency to decline slightly, but the store market remained firm. Store Cattle.—The store cattle yarding was about the same as a week ago as regards numbers and quality There were no lines or pens of anything outstanding offered, the quality being comprised of various small lots of different classes. Prices realised were about on a par with the previous sale, and the bulk of the yarding was disposed of at auction. Two-year-old steers realised from £6 15s to £7 10s; 18-months steers from £4 17s 6d to £5 15s; steer calves, £3 ss; mixed-sex calves, £2 9s; small calves (mostly heifers), 28s; forward-conditioned empty heifers, £5 15s to £6 2s; yearling heifers from £3 5s to £3 15s; good fresh-condi-tioned empty cows, £5 5s to £6; poorer and aged sorts down to £3 10s. Fat Cattle.—The yarding of fat cattle was slightly in excess of the previous sale as regards numbers, and the quality all round was fairly good. Not manv good bullocks were yarded, but the few of good quality realised round about last week’s rates. Some very prime cow and heifer beef was forward, but for this quality prices receded somewhat. Medium and inferior’ stuff was to some extent included, gnd the drop in this class was quite noticeable. Extra prime bullocks realised up to £l5 15s; good medium-weights from £l3 to £l4 10s; lighter sorts down to £lO 10s; extra prime heifers up to £ll 12s 6d; medium-weights from £9 to £11; lighter soi'ts down to £7; extra prime cows up to £l2 2s 6d; medium-weights from £7 10s to £9; lighter sorts down to £6. A few vealers were yarded,.and these met with the usual competition. Store Sheep.—The yarding in this section was the largest for some time, and prices realised must be considered quite satisfactory for vendors. Store lambs, if anything, were inclined to ease a little. A line of good conditioned, well-grown, two-tooth wethers realised 28s 2d; 120 sound-mouthed ewes (not guaranteed), 265; aged and inferior ewes, from 4s to 12s. according to condition. A nice line of ewe lambs realised 26s 7d while wether lambs from the same line realised 225. Rape lambs in good condition brought from 22s to 235; poorer conditioned wether lambs from 19s to 20s 6d. There was a line of good mixed sex lambs which sold at 22s 9d.

Fat Sheep and Lambs.—The yarding of sheep was considerably larger than a week ago, and comprised some very nice quality in both ewe and wether mutton. The fat lamb yarding was about the same as last week, but the quality was lately up to the previous standard. Prices of fat wethers declined to the extent of about Is 6d per head all round, and the same applied to extra heavy ewes, but for any freezing quality ewes, prices were about on a par with last week. Fat lamb prices receded slightly, but anything of good quality realised schedule rates, and a few exceptionally good lines appeared to exceed these rates. A few pens of extra heavy lambs brought very high prices, but these were well above average and would probably come in at schedule rates. Extra prime wethers realised up to 33s 6d; good butcher’s wethers, from 29s to 31s 6d; lighter sorts, down to 27s 6d; prime heavy ewes, up to 24s 6d; medium weight, from 17s to 19s 6d; lighter sorts, down to 15s 6d; extra heavy lambs, up to 36s 3d; good medium weight freezing lambs, from 28s to 30s; lighter sorts, down to 245, WAIAREKA YARDS SALE. The range of prices was as follow: —Fat lambs, 26s to 295; fat wethers, 25s 6d to 31s 3d, according to weight and quality; fat ewes, 20s to 22s fid; mixed-sex store lambs, 22s 6d to 24s 9d for best, and from 12s fid to 17s 9d for culls and indifferent sorts; aged ewes, Us. The yarding of cattle covered a wide range, and the prices were as follow:— Fat bullocks, from £9 for light up to £l3 for heavier weights; fat steers, £6 7s 6d; fat cows, from £3 10s for light and inferior, up to £8 for better sorts; fat heifers, from £5 to £8 12s 6d; vealer, £3 10s; part fat cows, up to £6 ss; empty cows from £3 7s 6d to £5 10s; 18-month-old mixed sexes, £4 10s; best calves, £2 to £2 10s; small calves, 20s; potter bulls, £3 10s to £7; dairy cows coming to profit, £5 5s to £8; Jersey heifers, spring calvers, £3 10s up to £4 12s 6d. ■- A small offering of pigs met with a poor demand', and prices were on a low scale, as follow: —Pen of fat porkers, 30s; slips, 10s to Ils; best weaners, 7s 6d; small weaners, 5s to 6s. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. SYDNEY, February 18. At the wool sales 10,307 bales were sold. The market was very firm at- the closing rates of last week, with good competition for all sections. Thinly grown faulty lines still showed irregularity. Greasy merino brought 25d. SYDNEY, February 19. At the wool sales 11,614 bales were sold.
