RIVAL ROUTES.
GfSBORNE-WAIROA RAILWAY. GISBORNE. February 19. The Minister of Public Works (Mr E. A. Ransom) returned to Gisborne tonight after a visit to Waikokopu and an inspection of the proposed coastal route for the Gisborne to Wairoa railway. The Minister was accorded a civic reception, and later received deputations on grants for roads and bridges and in reference to the route of the proposed railway from Wairoa. The tenor of opinion was that the railway was required at the earliest possible time. Large deputations, urging the merits of the rival inland and coastal routes, placed their views before the Minister. In reply, Mr Ransom explained that he and his colleagues wished to make a personal inspection of the district’s potentialities and difficulties. Later they would meet and discuss matters and receive full estimates of costs, when a decision regarding the route would be announced.
