“ It is high time wc objected, not only to the reflector regulations, but also to civil servants being legislators,” said the chairman (Mr A. E. Ansell) at the con- * ference of the South Island Motor Union in Christchurch. “It is time we informed the Government that we are not going to allow the country to be run by civil servants.” A resolution was before the meeting that the Government should be asked to cancel the regulations referring to red reflectors on motor cars, declaring the use of these reflectors a waste of money, and not providing any added measure of safety for road users. Others members spoke strongly concerning the regulation and the motion was carried. About 15 men are engaged in dismantling the Theatre Royal, Ashburton, and preparing for its reconstruction (says the Guardian). Good progress has been made with the work, and only the shell of the main building remains. The stage has been cut back and lowered to the correct height, and scaffolding is being placed in position ready for the raising of the roof. The front four bays will be lifted 4ft and the remainder 10ft, to allow of the building of the dress circle. The stage now goes back to the old supper room. An orchestra well will be sunk, and the front portion of the floor will be lowered a foot. At the back it will be raised 18in. giving a slope- from zero to 30in. Bricklayers are erecting the front part of the structure, which is about 15ft high already.
