JAS. BEECOT.

Solutions of problems* games* <md analyses liv rited for this column. Gamoa should be written in six columns as below, and all cerrespondenca addressed to tha Draught* Editor, Otago Witness Office, Dnnedin.

By

PROBLEM 6249.

G. Crookston, Grangemouth.

Black 5, 11, 12, 21.

White 13* 20, 30, King 19. Wh’te to move and -win. A position for the expert. White has to -win without the move. PROBLEM 6250.

By

J. Moore, Maryhill.

Black 1,6, 16, King 26.

White 11, 14, 15, 17. Black to move and win. x Contains a couple of nice points. Most amateurs would be sure to let the win slip. TO CORRESPONDENTS. J. A., Wyndham.—Thanks for various analyses. G. A. 8., Christchurch.—Gore games appreciated, and correction received. W. H. M., Coromandel.—Thanks for problems. Note.—A number of criticisms are held over until next week.—Draughts Editor. GAMES. DOMINION TOURNEY. The following pair of games were played In the tourney held at Wellington during Easter, 1927:— Game 6685—“ Kelso Cross.” Black: G. A. Brown, White: F. Hutchins.

Notes by G. A. Brown, champion. , (a) 16 20 is a popular reply. Text forms the “ Kelso Cross,” one of the most complex games, even more so than that of the “ Laird and Lady.” (b) This is usually avoided by the safetyloving expert, who prefers 26 23. (c) This is not so good now; 24 20 is better. (n) 17 14 is supposed to draw, but 30 26 loses. GAME 6686- --** TCelsn Hrnea **

(a) Better than 8 12, which is often adopted. (b) 27 23 is a good defensive lint;, but 25 21 is dangerous. (c) White can still follow the counterpart. (n) This probably loses; 7 10 Is the standard reply. (E) If White now plays the counterpart move Black can win. (F) If 3 8, 10 14, 8 15, 14 23, 15 18, 23 26, 18 25, 21 30, 31 22, 9 14. Draws. CORRESPONDENCE GAMES. The two games given below were played by correspondence between Messrs Jas. Bruce (New Plymouth), and G. Lobban (Tu Awamutu). The keynote is originality:— Game 6687—“ Cross.” Black : Jas Bruce. White: G. Lobban

(a) This forms Problem 6245, by Jas. Bruce. White to move,,and draw. For play see under " Solutions to Problems ” in this issue. Game 6688—" Fife.” Black: Jas. Bruce. White : G. Lobban.

SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. Problem 6245 (by Jas. Bruce). Black 2,4, 6,7, 8, 12, 16, 22; White 14, 18, 19, 23, 28, 29, 31, 32„ White to move and draw :—

(a) The following also draws: 28 24, 16 20, 32 27, 8 11. 19 15, 4 8, 24 19, 11 16, 27 24, 20 27, 31 24, IB 20, 15 10, 6 15. Drawn. Problem 6246 (by Jos. Allan). Black 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 21 ; White 20, 23, 25, 29, 30, King 6. White to move and win :—

A TRICKY POSITION. Mr Jos. Allan, Wyndham, has forwarded the position diagrammed below, with the remark : “ What was described as a ‘ tricky problem ’ way back in December, 1906, and is undoubtedly a most interesting and instructive position. Having given much serious study in endless variations, and having convinced myself that the terms are wrong, I hand it owr to you. Mr Boreham and Mr Dunne fought it out, but I hold both were wrong.” [We believe a great controversy raged over this position about 20 years ago in this and probably other columns. We are not familiar with it, but perhaps some of our critics or Mr Boreham can supply the particulars.—Draughts Editor.] Black 1,3, King 19.

White 10, 11, 13, King 7. White to move and win. Mr F. Dunne gave 13 9, 19 16, 9 6. 16 19, 6 2, 19 16, 26, 16 19, then 7 2 followed by 19 15. White wins. Mr Boreham gave 19 16 instead of 19 15, imprisoning the King by 1 5 to draw. The following is my solution :—

(a) 3 8, 10 7, 1 6, etc., or 3 8, 10 7 8 11, or 8 12. White wins. (B) Varies from Mr Dunne’s play. <•9 16 111 * 24 27 > 11 16-d, 3 8. White wins. (D) If 12 16-e, 27 24, 11 15, 3 7, 1 5, 2 6 ’* 9 I®, *24 27, 15 18, 7 10, 19 23, 27, 31. White wins. (®) “ 11 15 > 3 7. 1 5,2 6, 12 16, 27 24, 16 20, 24 27, 15 19, 7 11, 19 24, 27 23, 24 28, 11 15. White wins. NEW ZEALAND DRAUGHTS ASSOCIATION. CONSTITUTION AND RULES. In accordance with a motion passed at “*e mst annual meeting in Christchurch, 500 copies of the constitution and rules were printed in booklet form. It' is a handy little pamphlet of 18 pages, sin x 4in. As the association is depending mainly upon the sale of these books to defray the cost of printing, it is hoped that all draughts players will avail themselves of the opportunity of procuring a copy. The price is reasonable —only' sixpence. Copies may be obtained from the Draughts Editor, who is secretary of the association; also from Mr E. Gibbard, Box 119, Dannevirke. GLENHAM v. OTARA. The return match between these clubs was played at Glenham recently, and resulted after a closely contested match in a win for the home team by 29 wins to 25 wins. Following are the scores:—
