FATAL MOTOR SMASH.

ST. BATHANS RESIDENT KII .1 FIT

As the result of a motor car accident, which occurred near Naseby at about 8.45 on Friday night, Cuthbert Pyle, who resided in the St. Bathans district, was killed instantly. A man named Henry Scherp, who was an occupant of the car, was seriously injured. 'He was attended by Dr Eudey, and then removed to the Naseby Hospital. The other occupants of the car were Arthur Scherp, taxi-driver, of Dunedin, and Constable Excell, of Roslyn, both of whom received minor injuries. These men also received medical attention at the Naseby Hospital. , According to particulars received on Saturday, Arthur Scherp and the police constable had attended the funeral of Frederick Scherp, at St. Bathans, on Friday afternoon, and were returning to Naseby. The accident was caused through the car striking the Swinburn bridge. impact threw the occupants from their seats.

Constable Excell returned to Dunedin on Saturday night. He is suffering from slight injuries to one of his legs, and was confined to his bed on Sunday. An inquest on the body of Cuthbert Pyle was held on Saturday afternoon at Naseby. After hearing the evidence of those concerned in the accident, the acting coroner (Mr F. Hore) returned a-verdict to the effect that deceased was accidentally killed in a motor-car accident at the Swinburn bridge, no blame being attachable to anyone. A rider was added to the verdict drawing attention to the fact that the approach to the bridge was not very safe for motor and other vehicles.
