MAIN HIGHWAYS.

CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. The South Island Motor Union, at its annual meeting to-day, carried the following resolution :■ That owing to the necessity for tne Highways Board having a closer knowledge of local district conditions and a better understanding of local district problems than is possible at present, the time is ripe for the establishment of separate boards for the North and South Islands.”

It was generally agreed by the delegates that if the South Island could not get a board of its own at least the South Island motorists should get an extra representative on the present board. It was decided to prepare a questionnaire for parliamentary candidates on the subject.
