WAIAREKA SALE. There was a good yarding at the Waiareka sale on Tuesday and a fair attendance of buyers. The sale was a little erratic, and the demand for store sheep did not come up to expectations. Fat cattle and dairy cattle were in much better demand. In the fat cattle section as high as £l4 was paid for cows; light steers brought from £l4 14s to £l4 17s 6d; Tor store cattle good yearlings realised £3 and store cows £4 10s. In the fat sheep section prime wethers brought up 10*413, and shorn wethers 30s; fat wether hoggets were passed in at 27s 6d. There was ft fair yarding of' store sheep, principally hoggets, but the demand was unexpectedly poor, and many lines were passed. Wether hoggets were sold at 275; ewes and lambs, all counted, fetched only 18s. There was a good offering of pigs; sljps were sold at 20s, weaners at'l2s 6d to 13s, and small, weaners at 5s od to 8s 6d.

ADDINGTON MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 26. There were somewhat larger yardings of fat cattle and fat and store sheep at Addington tb-day. The beef supply was considerably added to by lines from the North Island, and the quality was on the whole exceptionally good. There was a steady demand at late rates. There was a fairly firm sale for prime fat sheep, but other classes were inclined to be easier. Store sheep met with a dull demand, and prices showed a decline. There was a rather larger entry of store sheep, and except for a few lines of young wethers the quality was not attractive. The sale was a dragging one, and dry sheep were down in some cases Is 6d per head, and ewes and lambs were ..about Is below the previous week’s i-atcs. Good halfbred wethers made from 32s to 34s 6d; others, 25s 6d to 27s 3d; shorn wethers to 25s 6d; ewes and lambs made from 16s to 19s-6d (all counted); three-quarter-bred ewe hoggets to 27s 6d; halfbred wether hoggets, 23s 6d to 265; backward mixed-sex hoggets, 18s to 20s 6d. There was an entry of 84 spring lambs, the supply being beyond butchers’ requirements and prices were lower by several shillings per head, and ranged from 35s to 40s 4d for the larger lambs and 27s to 34s 6d for the smaller. There was a fair proportion of prime sheep in a good yarding of fats, and generally -the market was somewhat irregular. Prime sheep showed practically-- no change, but big sheep not well finished and light wethers suitable for shearing were also a little easier, the decline in cases representing Is to Is 6d per head. Prime wethers sold to 52s 4d; prime heavy ■wethers made from 43s to 48s; prime medium-weight wethers, 37s 6d to 425; medium wethers, 32s to 355; shorn wethers, 26s 4d to 36s 4d; extra prime ewes to 475-4 d; prime ewes, 36s to 41s; medium ewes, 28s 6d to 345; aged and inferior ewes. 26s lOd to 28s. There was a good yarding of fat cattle, which numbered 457 head. North Island consignments included very prime lines of Herefords. Polled Angus, and Hereford crosses and purebred Polled Angus. The West Coast was also well represented. The yarding was one of the best for quality that has been offered for some time. The sale throughout was ve y sound, and although there was some irregularity shown, there was little >r no quotable change from the previous week’s rates. Choice st-sr and heiler beef may be quoted up to 52s per 1001 b; average prime beef, 44s to 48s; medium quality, 39s 6d to 42s 6d; plain heavy steer, 35s to 40s; prime cow and heifer, 45s to 47s 6d; medium, 39s to 'ls 6d; and rough down to 30s. Extra prime steers sold to £23 7s 6d; prime steers, £lB 10s to £2l 10s; medium steers, £l6 10s to £18; ordinary steers, £l3 7s 6d to £l6; extra prime heifers, to £l6 12s 6d; prime heifers, £l4 to £l6; ordinary heifers, £9 17s 6d to £l3 10s; extra prime cows, to £l9 2s 6d; prime cows, £l3 to £l6 10s: medium cows, £9 10s to £l2 10s; aged and inferior cows, £6 2s 6d to £9. There was a large entry in the vealers’ pens, about three-fourths being young calves, a proportion of larger sorts being the smallest since last season. Prices were easier than those of the previous week. Twelve to 18 months sorts sold to £8 10s; good vealers made from £6 to £7 15s; medium vealers, £3 to £5 10s; small calves, 17s 6d to £2 ss.

There was a fairly large yarding of store cattle, made up chiefly of cows, with a few small lots of heifers, and most of the offering was low in condition. Good cows made from £5 to £7 17s; medium ■cows, £3 5s to £4 10s; inferior cows, 20s to £2 15s.

There was an entry of 81 head of dairy cattle, the majority of which were in poor condition. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made from £9 to £l2; medium sorts, £6 10s to £8 10s; inferior -and backward, £4 to £6; extra good heifers, to £l3; others, £5 5s to £8 10s.

There was a large entry of porkers, and a medium one of baconers. Choppers sold to £5 16s 6d; light baconers made from £3 7s 6d to £4; heavy baconers, £4 5e to £4 15s; extra heavy, to £5 5s (average price per lb, 6Jd to 7d) ; light porkers, 35s to 47s 6d; heavy porkers, 52s 6d to 58s 6d (average price per lb, 64d to 71d).-

OAMARU MARKETS. OAMARU, September 28. The Oamaru cereal market continues to Show a lack of animation owing to the major portion of last season’s produce being cleaned up. A few late lines of Tuscan and Hunters wheat have reached the millers. For the former the ruling price Of 5s 8d per bushel was obtained, while the price paid for Hunters was 6s Id per bushel. Although there is a fair demand for Oats, the quantity offering is small. The hominal price of A grade Gartons is 3s 2d per bushel, on trucks, and of B grade 2s 9d. Oaten sheaf chaff has been marketed fit £4 10s per ton, on trucks, country stations.

A keen demand exists for table potatoes, for which up to £8 per ton on trucks is being paid. This demand is likely to Continue until the new season’s potatoes hre available.

Cowgrass is still offering, but there is ho life in the market, and the best price fciven is in the neighbourhood of 6d per lb. Owners are not disposed to sell at this price. The private transactions in live stock nave been on a comparatively small scale. There is a good demand for fat stock, but little is offering. Prime fat wethers have sold at as high as 465, while lighter have realised from 35s to 43s and shorn wethers 325. Hoggets are in request, but the ideas of value vary so much that little business has been done. Offers of 23s 6d for wether hoggets have been refused. Full-mouthed ewes £nd lambs, all counted, have sold at 19s

Fat "cattle are offering a little more freely. Best quality steers have sold up

to £l4 7s 6d and medium steers at £9 2s 6d to £lO 2s 6d. Good heifers have realised from £l2 17s 6d to £l3, and lighter from £9 15s to £ll 10s. Beef cows have sold at from £7 to £l4, the latter price being obtained for extra good quality. Only a limited quantity of store cattle is offering. Empty cows have been marketed at £4 10s and yearling steers at £3 2s 6d to £3 15s. - Dairy cows coming to profit have found buyers at from £6 to £8 for ordinary sorts. Pigs have been offered freelv. The best stores have realised 26s 6d to 33s 6d, small stores 18s to 245. slips 14s to 16s, best weaners 12s to 15s; medium weaners Ss to lOd. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. INVERCARGILL September 30. Oats. —This market is distinctly in a depressed state, but such is of very little interest to local merchants, as stocks held by them virtually on the average hardly exceed .a few hundred sacks. Offers from northern buyers are on the basis of 3s IOJd A grade, but holdings are so small that it is altogether unlikely that any merchant would think of accepting less than 4s. Unless oats held by northern buyers come back on to the market it is difficult to see how there can be any al--teration in current rates so far as the port of Bluff is concerned. Chaff.—This still maintains the level which’ has been current for a month or six weeks, £4 10s, on trucks, country sid ings, for prime quality, sacks being supplied by buyers. Supplies are offering in limited quantities, but as the demand is purely local, shipping being altogether out of the question at this price, offerings are about equal to the demand. Ryegrass.—This market is still firm with a fair volume of business passing between merchants at from 5s 6d to 5s lOd for 271 b to, 301 b machine-dressed seed respectively Values fluctuate to some extent, depending on germination and purity figures. Stocks in merchants’ hands are getting into small compass, some reporting that they have apparently I hardly sufficient for the demand of their I own distributing trade. Crested Dogstail.—ln view of the outturn of the Irish crop, there -has been something m the nature of a drop in local values. Between merchants fo.b. per lb is now an extreme price for highgrade seed. English quotations are in the region of Id per lb -over and above this figure, but as all possibilities of export are virtually past hence the fall in local values. THE STOCK MARKET. The stock market continues.good for all classes offering, and prices remain firm. Fat cattle are coming forward in regular supplies, the offerings being sufficient for local requirements, and the market is steady, good quality bullocks and prime heifers being keenly competed for. The yardings of fac sheep have hardly been so large at recent sales, due, no doubt, to vendors realising it is better to hold and shear any wethers other than well-finished sheep. The store sheep market is quiet, feed, due to the wet, cold weather, being bare, and any who are under-stocked are chary of buying until better growing weather sets in. Store cattle are still selling well, more especially yearlings, ell-bred steers and heifers showing breeding making prices which must be satisfactory to the vendors. —Extra prime bullocks to 10s ’ prime heavy bullocks, £lB to £2l; medium-weight, £l3 10s to £l5; prime heavy heifers, £ll to £l4 10s; medium, £8 prlme heavy cows, £lO 10s to JOs; medium, £8 to £9 10s; vealers, to 355; runners, to £5; prime ox beef, 40s to 42s 6d per 1001 b; heifer beef, to 40s ?A^, 1001b ’ c ? w beef > 30s to 32s 6d per 1001 b.
