—The crops in the Baltic countries have been practically ruined by heavy rains. —Milk is in itself a complete food, its only rival in this respect being the oyster. “ When Sir Alexander Roberts wrote asking me to speak to you on the subject of prisons, I must confess that I felt somewhat hesitant to accept his invitation,” said Mr B. L. Dallard, the Con-troller-general of Prisons,, when speaking at the Rotary Club luncheon in Wellington on Tuesday (says the Dominion) “We generally regard the prison service as a silent service—it deals so much with the sordid side of life. But to-dajr I should like to say that I am glad of the opportunity of being here, first, bcause I understand that the aim of your organisation is ser-vice-p-and I feel that possibly I may be able to reveal to you an avenue of further service—one that has been described by a leading statesman at Home as ‘ a noble work ’ —that of helping in reclaiming to citizenship those who have deviated from the paths of upright living. I am also glad to the opportunity of thanking the Rotary Club for the splendid help already given to my department by many Rotarians in various parts of the Dominion. The standard set by your members is an inspiration to many of those in our care. Selfishness, in my opinion, is one of the root causes of crime, and the example of self-sacrifice and service which motivates Rotarians who visit our Borstal Institutions particularly, is both an eye-opener and a challenge to many of the lads.”
