CROSSING SMASH.

ACCIDENT IN RATTRAY STREET WOMAN’S LEG BROKEN. CAR AND TRAIN COLLIDE. A crossing smash, in which the occupants of the motor car were extremely fortunate in escaping serious injury, occurred at the Rattray street railway crossing at 7,55 on Saturday evening. The car, a large sedan, was driven by Mr Sinclair Sutherland, manager of the local branch of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., and accompanying him were Mrs Sutherland and Airs J. Al. Paterson.

The party was returning from the Coptic, after conveying Captain Williams, who earlier in the evening had dined with Mr and Mrs Sutherland, back to his vessel. When travelling up Rattray street towards the railway crossing Mr Sutherland failed to hear the warning bell heralding the approach of the slow train from Clinton, and the car was halfway across the line when it was struck by the engine, turned completely round, and carried across the road to the signal box. Mrs Paterson, who received a broken leg, was the only member of the party to be badly injured, though all were cut by flying glass and suffered from shock. Dr 0. M. Greenslade was summoned, and after receiving attention Mr and Mrs Sutherland were taken to their home, Airs

Paterson being removed to hospital. The .car was very badly smashed.
