TIN MINING IN SIAM.
DUNEDIN ENGINEER INTERVIEWED. * AUCKLAND, September 15. A young New Zealander in the person of Mr A. Aitken, a mining engineer, who has spent the last three years in Siam engaged in tin mining, arrived by th# steamer Sussex this morning, on six months’ furlough. He hails from Dunedin, where he will spend his holiday. Mr Aitken states there is a decided boom in mining in the Malay States, and many Australians and New Zealanders are engaged there. He explained that tin mining is nearly all carried out by dredging, the water being let into the various paddocks, which are leased. Many of these dredges came some years ago from the South Island of New Zealand. Three-fifths of the world’s tin, said Mr Aitken, was mined in the Straits Settlement. He said he had been looking forward to his holiday in New Zealand and did not intend to devote any of his time to business while on furlough. He spoke of the quiet life in the Straits Settlement, but mentioned that the nearest town to where he was located was Penang, which was a very modern and gay city.
