The colours in cotton goods will not “ run ” if the garments have been soaked beforehand in salt find lukewarm water. Troublesome ink stains and fruit stains may be removed from linen if the article is put into a strong solution of salt and cold water. The bars of many old grates soon become rusty in bad weather, hut if a lemon that has done duty as far as juice’ is concerned is rubbed over them they will take a polish easily. The best way to fit a candle into a candlestick is to fill&the holder with boiling water. Empty out the water and put a candle into the heated place, hold it for a couple of minutes, by which time it will be fixed and upright. To remove wallpaper, make a solution of alum and water—all the alum that the water will dissolve—and apply to the walls with a whitewash brush. Wet the paper thoroughly, leave to dry, and it will then peel off easily. Wash the brush thoroughly after use. Sandwiches will keep moist and attractive if they are packed in greaseproof paper which has previously been placed under the cold-water tap. A final wrapping in a table napkin, also slightly moistened, will make assurance doubly sure. To keep the colour in woollen washing fabrics of crimson, red, or brown, add a tablespoonful of vinegar to each gallon of rinsing water. For mauve or violet linens, and for flannels, add a handful of salt to soaking and rinsing waters. The cause of most of the trouble with oil stoves is the presence of dirt in some important part. If you have any trouble with rapid consumption of oil, or wicks, or smoke, or smell, take the stove to pieces and clean every part. You will almost imagine you have a brand-new stove when you use it again. Carbolic acid is the cheapest disinfectant you can use. Allow lOoz liquid carbolic to 3 gallons of water. Pour about half a pint dpwn each pipe, and bottle the remainder for use as required. AU pipes should be disinfected at least once a fortnight during hot weather.
