KNOCK-OJJT COMPETITION. On Saturday afternoon the senior men’s knock-out competition was commenced at Logan park,, when Training College met Albany. The match was started w'ith an attack by Albany, Rennick taking the ball down the field and centring to Baxter, who scored. For a time, the play was of an up-and-down nature. Twose, in Albany's goal, was very safe, and College was unable to pierce the Reds’ defence. The next goal also went to Albany, half time being called with the Reds two up. College took up the offensive from the beginning of the second spell, and dominated the play for the remainder' of the gaine. Taylor was the first to score, his goal being well played. Shortly after Marnmg scored, and from the bully College rushed the ball to Albany’s circle. Again up-and-down play was seen, and finally Albany obtained a one-goal lead. Almost immediately, play was transferred to the Reds’ territory, for Hanning to score. The final score was : Training College 3 goals, Albany 3. JUNIOR SEVEN-A-SIDE. PROMINENT REFEREE IN DISFAVOUR. CHRISTCHURCH, September 13. Mr W. H-. Down, secretary of the Ne.v Zealand Hockey Association, president of the Selwyn Hockey Club, and a prominent referee, will not referee any more hockey matches for the next three years if the request made by the Management Committee of the Canterbury Hockey Association is endorsed by the Referees’ Association. Down was reported to the Management Committee at a meeting on Monday for making an insulting remark to another referee at the (ive-a-side tournament at Hagley Park last Saturday. A motion was then carried to the above effect. PROPOSED VISIT. DISCUSSED BY ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, September 15. The New Zealand Hockey Association discussed a proposal to arrange a tour by an English team. Word was received from Mr W. J. Burton, who is at present in England, that the authorities considered it impossible to send a fully-repre-sentative team, as many leading players were attending the universities. They considered, however, that a very strong team could be obtained from the army and navy. The secretary, Mr Down, said the team would be composed largely, or entirely, of officers, and the expenses of such a team would be very heavy. He suggested another visit from an Indian Army team. The meeting authorised Mr Burton to make further negotiations before taking definite action.

“A tremendous amount of harm was done in Sydney by reports from Auckland of the Salvation Army mourning parade for the sins of Auckland,” said Mr W. B. Leyland, who returned from Australia by the Marama recently (says an exchange). “The reports made the people of Sydney believe that Chicago; Paris, Venice, and New York had been put in the background by Auckland. They are now inclined to believe that Auck* land is a dreadful place.” Radio broadcasting has its drawbacks, as several speakers at the Christchurch R.S.A. smoke concert for the flyers found the other evening. War stories (says the Sun), in particular, lose much of their flavour when toned down for the benefit of listeners-in, and one speaker* who had forgotten the transmitter* showed consternation when reminded, at the end of his anecdote, of its presence. Even the Mayor of Cliristchurch, on ond occasion, was warned to be carefull
