MOTOR CYCLE TRIAL. TEAM OF ENGLISH GIRLS. RUGBY, September 11. The international six-days’ motor cycle trial, in which Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Holland are competing, began over the Yorkshire moors. Much interest is shown in the team of three English girls—Misses Cottle and Foley and Mrs M'Lean—who are defending the international Silver Vase, which they won against foreign male competitors last year. Many of the motor cycles ridden by British competitors are next year’s models, and show a marked improvement in the reduction of noise. NEW ZEALAND BOWLERS. WIN AGAINST WINNIPEG. The New Zealand 50-Mile Cycle Championship was held yesterday from Wellington to Mungaroa Hill and back. A bad patch in the Taita Gorge caused several of the riders to fall on the way out on the home run. The 12minute men made, the pace. Coming through the Taita Gorge Grose fell in the bad patch of road. Lukey opened up a gap on his co-markers and caught up with Whitten, the Auckland rider who, off the two-minutes’ mark, had ridden exception-

THE SANDERS CUP. CANTERBURY’S NEW DEFENDER. CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Of interest to yachtsmen throughout New Zealand will be the news that Canterbury is to have a new one-design 14 footer racer this year to take the place of Mr G. Andrews’s Betty, the winner of the Dominion championship for the last three years, but now retired for at least one season from the contest. The new boat is being built by M r F. Dobbie, of Lyttelton, and is already well under way. Her builder is now only awaiting the inspection and approval of his craft by the provincial measurers to complete the hull. A complete new suit of sales will be imported from England, •and everything is being done to have the new boat in first-class racing condition. Her builder will be remembered as the builder and owner of Usher, the 14 footer which gained one victory over Betty in the trials two years ago, and he was also connected with the 14 footer Pio-Pio, which was wrecked two or three seasons back at Lyttelton. The Usher will be kept in the best of order this season to provide a test for the new boat in the trials, and it is expected that with his very considerable experience of both the building and the sailing of this class of boat, Mr Dobbie should produce a worthy representative for the province. It is confidently expected that her performances will entitle her to this position.

These fines' go to the consolidated fund, which keeps two beds for cyclists in the hospital,” said Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., at the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court last week (says the Chronicle), when he fined several cyclists for riding without lights. The'chief city inspector (Mr G. Fear) said that since the end of 1923 there had been 300 convictions against members of the "no light” brigade. The magistrate said it appeared as if there was only one thing to do and that-was to provide for the registration of all cyclists and to cancel licenses after convictions? Governor “Al.” Smith, .the United States Presidential candidate, received recently a freak hen’s egg with “S" formed by' the twisted shell, which was laid by one of. the sender’s fowls. He wrote “A. E. Smith will be elected President. Even the chickens clucking about you.”
