Judges at public competitions can be diplomatically helpful to performers (states the Auckland Star). At the local festival recently the adjudicator, of the vocal section expressed himself in happy style. The singing in one class, Mr Kerry said, showed an evident lack of vocal training. It was a fine thing to have a good voice, but the possessor had to learn to use it. The voice was just like an instrument. He urged a greater recognition o'f the value of voice production. Referring to song selections and to a class just heard, the speaker smilingly added: “It’s wonderful what a weakness competitors have for ‘Annie Laurie ’ —a good number, no doubt, but there are others. However (sigh), here she is again, trotted out for another airing.” He said it reminded him of his last visit, when several singers gave “All Through the Night.”—(Laughter.)
