ROTORUA TOURNAMENT. OPENING GAMES. ROTORUA, August 28. The Rotorua open golf tournament was opened in fine weather to-day and finished in heavy rain. There were 94 entries. The leaders in the qualifying rounds were:—-Morrice (142), Lusk (153), S. E. Carr (153), Seifert, jun. (154), Britton (154), Ralph (154) . The Rotorua golf championship semifinals ’ produced , :fine . contests. ' H.' B. Lusk (Auckland) defeated E. Carr . (Rotorua) ?2: up and Morrice (Rotorua) defeated Tidmarsh (Auckland) easily, the winper returning‘a card of 68. The finals, over 36; holes, will be played ; tomorrow. <
LUSK WINS THE FINAL. ROTORUA, August 31. The final between 11. B. Lusk (Auckland) and Morrice (Rotorua) resulted in a win for Lusk, one up. During the match a half gale blew, and the play demanded great judgment. A “ gallery ” of over 600 followed the match. At no time was the difference more than one. At the eighteenth hole the match was all square, at the twenty-seventh all square, and again at the thirty-fifth. ’ HANDICAPS IN NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY, September 1. The women’s golf associates here agree with Miss Kay that the golf handicaps in New Zealand are too flattering, and that the New Zealand players in the handicap events at the recent Australian championships suffered thereby. The handicaps here are revised every two years, but no player’s mark is ever moved up mor e than six strokes. Prominent officials consider that the general tightening up of the methods is necessary in New Zealand if visiting players are to be placed on an equal footing with Australians. UNOFFICIAL WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP. NEW YORK, August 29. At Detroit, Hagen defeated Johnny Farrel in the United States open golf championship by one up in the first of three -36-hole unofficial world’s championship matches. WALKER CUP MATCHES. CHICAGO, August 30. The United States scored their first victory in the Walker Cup matches today, when George von Elm and Jess Sweetzer defeated T. F. Perkins and William Tweddell in the two-ball foursome, 7 and 6. Bobby Jones and Chick Evans defeated C. O. Hezlet and W. L. Hope, 5 and 3; Francis Ouimet and Jimmy Johnston defeated T. A. Torrance and Eustace Storey, 4- and 2; Watts Gunn and R. Mackenzie defeated John Beck a®d A. R. MacCallum, 7 and 5. CHICAGO, August 31. Bobby Jones defeated T. F. Perkins, 13 and 12, in the Walker Cup to-day. Torrance defeated Evans, 1 up. This was the only British golf victory in eight matches to-day. HAGEN TO VISIT AUSTRALIA. NEW YORK, August 30. It is understoqfl that Hagen will undertake an Australian tour shortly, after the forthcoming Professional Golfers’ Association tournament. He will also travel through the Far East. Hagen announced to-day that he will sail from San Francisco on October 20, for a golf tour of Australia. A VETERAN’S SUCCESS. LONDON; August 31.; The veteran golfer H. Taylor secured third place among 142 competing in" the southern qualifying rounds in the News of the World £lOOO competition on the Fulwell course. A. R. Bradbeer was first and T. H. Cotton second.
