The revival of trade is very slow in England, according to Mr F. J. West, a former Lord Mayor of Manchester, who was _a passenger from Sydney by the Niagara. Mr West said from the engineering point of view the improvement was steady, but slow. Regarding the cotton industry, an improvement was anticipated, but so far had not made itself felt in any marked degree. The cotton manufacturing industry of England had lost many of its pre-war markets. _ A motor hearse was an exhibit in a civil action at the Auckland Magistrate’s Court the other afternoon (relates the Star).. It was a handsome affair, and Hie litigating parties were concerned over its workmanship. “It’s good work ” queried plaintiff’s solicitor, when questioning a witness. Quick as a flash Mr F. D; M’Liver, who was appearing for defendant, said: "Oh. yes. It’s so good that people .are dying to get into it.” The decorum of the court was somewhat disturbed. Up to last week the . whaling party at ~Te Awaite, Tory Channel, had captured 55 whales since the opening of the season. This is a new record, the best previous total being 54' captures during a complete season; when two parties »vere operating with eight boats and 17 men. This, season only one party is operating, with three boats and five men. It is understood that so many whales have been taken that the shore factory is more or„less congested, and chasing operations are being temporarily suspended at intervals. “It is satisfactory to report that some desirable amendments were made to the Bankruptcy Act during last-session of Parliament, although there is still room for improvement in this measure,” said the president of the New Zealand Society Accountants, in his annual address to members (relates the Auckland- Star). “An act that very urgently requires attention at the hands of the Government-is the Companies Act,- which -is thoroughly obsolete; and should be brought* up to date and in line with the English Act. It is hoped that this measure w : 11 receive attention -at the hands of Parliament- iii the near future.”
