JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.

OTAGO ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The second annual meeting of the Otago Justices of the Peace Association was held in the Otago Officers’ Club Rooms, Moray place, on Tuesday night. The president (Mr H. C. Campbell) occupied the chair. -■ The annual report stated that the roll stood at 125 members. During the year the association held two meetings. On March 20 Sir C. E. Statham, M.P., gave' an address on “ Parliament and its Procedure,” pointing out that the Parliament of . New Zealand based its fundamental principles on Parliament as carried out In England at the present time. On April 30 Mr J. J. Marlow, who was the association’s delegate at the annual conference of the Justices Association recently held in Auckland, gave his impressions of the conference and, whilst members had read an account of the conference in tne “ Justices Manual,” Mr Marlow was able to explain many details and thus afford those who were not present a clearer understanding of what took place. In conclusion, Mr Marlow mentioned the social side of the conference, which was carried out in a manner that reflected great credit on the Auckland association. It was with regret that the loss by death of two members during the year was recorded—Messrs R. W. Glendinning and A. R. Wallis Mr Mark Cohen, who was greatly interested in the association, also passed away during the year. To the relatives of these gentlemen deepest sympathy was extended. The thanks of the association was extended to all those who had delivered addresses, and had helped in various ways. The statement of receipts and payments showed a balance of £2B 18s in the bank. The chairman extended a hearty' welcome to those present. He said it was very creditable that the membership had increased, but there were still a large number of justices in Dunedin who were not members. Tne’ formation of the association had served to bring justices together, with the result that a better undersanding was reached. He proposed the adoption of the report and balance sheet. The motion was carried.

The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing-year:—President, Mr H. E. Moller; vice-presidents—-Messrs J. J. Marlow, J. H. Wilkinson, and W. R. Piddington ; hon. solicitor, Mr H. E.
