ASSOCIATION.

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, August 21. The Council of the New Zealand Foote ball Association met to-night, and it was agreed that the match between Wellington and Otago for the Football Association trophy should take place on September 1, subject to suitable arrangements being made. Arrangements for the final of the Chatham Cup, Petone v. Northern (Dunedin), at the Basin Reserve, Wellingtonj on Saturday, have been completed. The Governor-General and the Prime Minister have been invited to be present. The cup, which at present is in the possession of Ponsonby (Auckland), is to be wired for in order that it may be presented to the winners at the close of the match.

Owing, to the financial position it was decided to write to the nine defaulting associations pressing for the payment of subscriptions. Attention was drawn to the delay in issuing the balance sheet of the tour of the New Zealand cricket team to England. Mr F. Campbell (chairman) said that about a year ago the council took up £lOO worth of shares of which half was paid up in the New Zealand Cricket Ltd., for the tour of the New Zealand cricket team to England. They were promised that when the manager returned to New Zealand the whole tiling would be straightened up, and they had heard no more from that day to this. It . was time that they expressed the opinion that they were looking for a balance sheet of that tour, and for the return of any sum which might be due to them. It was very dilatory on the part of the New Zealand Cricket Council that the matter had been left over for so long. He moved—“ That the association is very disappointed at the delay in publishing the balance sheet and in the repayment of any money invested in New Zealand Cricket, Ltd., and requests that body to furnish it with a statement.” Mr J. A. Milburn seconded, and this was carried. It was thought that the council might get back 4s or 5s for each 10s paid up.

The Northern right wing was citen dangerous but Haines was safe. Play hovered in the Northern area for a while with Petone shots being blocked. Then a gcod clearance by Perry-gave M'Lean a chance. The winger beat Steel and lobbed high into the centre, but the inside men were weak in the air, and the chance went begging. Petone, on the other hand, were relying too much on the halves. M'Cormack now Worked his way up through the centre and sent well ahead to M'Lean, with Steel in full ch&se. The back won, and cleared to the touch line. Campbell, with a long kick, opened up to M'Kenzie, the Winger beating Scoular and sending right across the goal mouth, but there was nobody there. With a great pass M'Core tnack let M'Lean away. The winger left

Steel standing and shot straight for the goal, but the ever alert M'Vean was there, and brought great applause with a magnificent clearance. Petone were making desperate efforts to increase their lead, and should have scored, but their shooting was very weak. Immediately Northern were at the other end, Ruddiman eventually sending past when in a good position. Campbell was the most conspicuous player on the field. From a free kick Steel sent well up to M'Kenzie, who back headed into goal for Scoular to kick a corner. M'Vean, at the other end, brought off a magnificent save from a long, low drive by M'Cormack. Northern were clapping on the pace and striving desperately to equalise, but the Petone defence had tightened. '’ln the closing moments of the game Northern burst away on the right, the finishing shot of M'Dowell hitting the outside of the net. Full time was called with play in midfield amidst great excitement and the score:—
