DAYLIGHT SAVING.

ANOTH ER SUGG EST JON. . WELLINGTON, July 31. Speaking in’ the House of Representatives to-night on the Municipal Corporations Bill, Mr T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South) advanced a further idea with a view to enabling those in the cities and the towns to have the benefit of daylight saving, notwithstanding the fact that it is now no longer legally in force. His idea was that the municipal bodies should take into consideration an amendment of the Municipal Corporations Act to deal with such difficulties as Arbitration Court awards that would be affected by voluntary daylight saying, r>s well as the hours of shops and offices closing, etc. He expressed the opinion that the Minister might take these matters into his consideration in connection with the Municipal Corporations Act. He himself would give close attention to it.

WARM SUPPORT IN INVERCARGILL.

INVERCARGILL, August 5. Warm support to the proposal to institute a local scheme of daylight saving was given by the directors of the Southland A. and P. .Association at a meeting on Saturday. The general tone of the discussion indicated that with one exception the directors recognised that while not in the interests of the country people daylight saving was a great boon to the townspeople, and nothing should be done to obstruct the carrying out of a scheme for Invercargill. The question is to be brought before a public meeting at an early date. LOCAL SCHEME PROPOSED. On Thursday evening a deputation consisting of Messrs 11. P. West, representing the Chamber of Commerce, and E. S. Wilson, representing the local sports bodies, waited on the Otago Trades and Labour Council for the purpose of enlisting the support of the trades unions in a proposed scheme of daylight saving in Duncam. r lhe scheme, as suggested by the deputation, was that an arrangement should be eome to for all local business places to open half an hour earlier in the mornings and to close half an hour earlier iii the evenings, the system to have effect over a period of six months. The deputation was confident that no difficulty would be experienced in making suitable arrangements for the running of the tram and suburban train services. After the ' deputation had withdrawn, the. proposal was discussed by the council, which was in favour, in the event of the scheme being put into operation, of the change made being an hour instead of half an hour, as suggested by the deputation. The greatest difficulty, the council considered, would be the matter of overruling the times for commencing work as set down in the various awards. Doubt was expressed that this could be done by the Arbitration Court, but it was though that an arrangement could be arrived at with the Government which would serve the purpose.

After the discussion a resolution was carried endorsing the suggestion made by the deputation, and the secretary was instructed to circularise all the unions, asking them to favour the scheme.
