Mr E. Tregaldis, conductor, of the Auckland Garrison Band, has been, appointed conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band, in succession to Mr Tom Gray, who .has resigned owing to ill-health. - , Miss Catherine Landreth, B.Sc. of home science, Otago University, and M;A., of lowa State College, has accepted the position of . research, specialist in nutrition in the Agricultural Experimental Station of Washington State College. Private advice has been received in Auckland by the friends of Sir Charles Batho to the effect that he contemplates visiting New Zealand, at the conclusion of his present term of office as Lord Mayor of London. 1

Major D. B. Blair, D. 5.0., New’ Zealand Staff Corps, of Whangarei, has been posted to the retired Jist with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He intends next year to take up his residence in France, of which country Mrs Blair is a native. Jackson,- of Wellington, who has been appointed Consul for New Zealand by - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peking, was born in 1881 at Roxburgh, Otago, where hia father, Yue Hi, was a storekeeper. In 1890 his mother took him, with other members of ‘the family, to the father’s village, about 150 miles from Canton, where his mother died within a year of her arrival. Mr -Jackson ivas educated at -the Diocesan School, Hongkong. He returned to New Zealand in 1904, and attended classes for two years at the Technical College, Dun;edin, where he gained a diploma. The following year he went to Shanghai where he lived for four years, and again came to New Zealand. IK 1911 °the Chinese Consul at Wellington engaged him as English secretary and translator and two rears later he was appointed by the Chinese Government as secretary to the Consulate, a position which he has filled since then, combined with the office of Supernumerary Consul since 1917. Mr W. A. Leitch, who has long been associated with the Union Bank of -Australia. has been appointed general mana?r r th e bank in succession to Mr A. H. Chambers. Mr- Leitch was formerly chief inspector for the bank i n New eal a nd.

Mr H. C. Guinness, assistant traffic manager of the Railway Department at Christchurch, has been promoted to the position of traffic assistant to the divisional superintendent at Auckland in succession to Mr H. A. Penn, who has been transferred to Christchurch as' district traffic manager for Canterbury Mr F W White, at present assistant traffic manager at Dunedin, will- take Mr Guinness’s place. On Tuesday afternoon the sixtv-fifth anniversary of the wedding of Mr and Mrs Charles Mills, of Tokoiti was celebrated, about- 70 relatives’ and friends being present. Mr and Airs Alills were married at Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, in 1863. and came’to New Zealand by the ship City of Dunedin, arriving at Port Chalmers in 1866. Amongst the congratulatory messages received were telegrams from the GovernorGeneral (Sir Charles Fergusson) and Lady Alice Fergusson, the Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates), and Mr. F Waite, M.P. for Clutha. A service of farewell to Misses Naomi Grey and Reta Dobson was held in the iork Place Hall on Wednesday evening, the Rev. W. Gray Dixon presiding. Tim two ladies who were the guests of honour are to leave shortly for China as outgoing missionaries for. the China Iqland Mission, and their popularity, together -with interest that has been created by their decision to undertake the work, doubtless accounted for the particularly large attendance.

Hi xr Wiig. Norwegian Consul at Bluff, received word by cablegram on Thursday that his king had. conferred unon him the decoration, of Knight of the First Order of St. Olav—the highest honour that can be attained in his country and the same as was awarded to Captain Amundsen on hie return from the North Pole. Mr Wiig is a well-known resident of the port,-and the news was received with acclaim among the townspeople, and many congratulatory telegrams were received from friends in other parts of the Dominion.

A cablegram from Sydney states that among the passengers on board the Marama are Major R. Furse. of the British Colonial Office, and Mr R. Robinson, technical commissioner of the British Forestry Commission. Dr. L. C. M'Nickle, of the Porirua Mental Hospital, has been appointed medical _ registrar to the Wellington Hospital with a commencing salary of £5OO a year.

The appointment of Messrs J. F. Bisset, -J. Boylen, Hugh Haggart, H. L. 'Haggart. James Johnson Thomas Johnson,- and D. A. Lawrence as members of the "Wangaloa Domain Board, and of Messrs G- Agnew, G. Buchanan, R. J. M. Cochrane, • D. M'Curdy, and J. Johnston as members of the Dipton Domain Board has been gazetted. The New Zealand delegation to the Empire Parliamentary Association’s Conference, which is being held in Canada this year will leave Auckland by the Aorangi to-day. Prior to bis departure from Wellington, the Postmaster-general (Mr W» Nosworthy) was informally entertained by his colleagues in the Cabinet and wished God-speed. The other members of the delegation are Mr J; B. Gow. M.D.C., Mr T. W. Rhodes (Thames), and Mr W. J. Jordan (Manukau).
