LAKE COUNTY. j U ?6< —The open weather continues, and for the past week it has been like spring. Football.—Two matches were played at Queenstown on Saturday last. The Senior game, Queenstown v. Glenorchy, ended in a draw 3 points each, each side scoring a try. Mr D. F. Macdonald was referee. The Junior match. Arrow v. Queenstown, was won by the latter by 11 points to 7. Mr A. Atley was referee. There were casualties in both matches. V. Middlemlss (Queenstown Seniors) sustained a wound In the face which necessitated the insertion of a few stitches, while J. Cronin (Glenorchy) fractured a small bone in his wrist. In the Junior game G. Murphy (Arrow) severely strained a ligament in his ankle. Basket Ball. —Queenstown Public School defeated Queenstown Convent (holders) In a match for the Major Browne Challenge Cup on Saturday by 3 goals to 2. Colleen M'Bride shot the three goals for the winners, and Fanny M'Neill scored for Convent. Personal.—Her many friends will regret to hear that Mrs John Butel, sen., of Arrowtown, underwent a serious operation in Stafford Hospital, Dunedin, last week. Some months ago she slipped and fell, sustaining an Injury to the knee, which was apparently not serious. Complications set in later, and it was found necessary to amputate the leg above the knee. It is satisfactory to learn that Mrs Butel Is making a rapid recovery from the operation.—Mr William Reid, chairman of the Lake County Council, who attended the Counties Conference in Wellington, returned home last evening. LUMSDEN. July 26.—This year we have experienced more foggy ' weather than for several years. Coupled with hard frost it has been exceedingly discomfiting. The weather now shows signs of spring, and the spring bird—the dotterel —has made its appearance. Tournament.—On Wednesday, 18th Inst., a very successful football tournament was held on the Lumsden recreation grounds. The weather was ideal, and there was a good attendance of the general public. Mr C. Blesham, as president, and Mr William Johnson, as secretary of the committee, carried out their arduous duties to the satisfaction of every one, as also did Mr T. Small, who was tournament superintendent. The Lumsden Senior team proved the champions of the day. In the Junior grade Gore High School was successful, and In the final round of the Schools' tourney Balfour A (J) beat Lumsden A (0). At the conclusion handsome cups were presented to each of the winning teams. In the evening the footballers held their annual ball. There was a large attendance, and the music left nothing to be desired. Golf.—On Saturday a team of six ladles and six men motored to Tapanui at the invitation of the Tapanui team to play a match on their ground. The day was an ideal one for golf, and a very enjoyable time was spent, the team being hospitably entertained by the Tapanui ladies. Hockey.—On Saturday, July 21, the Lumsden Ladies' Hockey team met a combined team from Balfour and Dipton at Lumsden, where a match was played, the object being to pick players for a North-end team to play a South-end team (Waikaia. Wendon, and Rlversdale) to be played at Balfour on July 28. WAIKAIA. July 26.—Contrary to all indications, the — past week has been one of beautiful springlike weather, and farmers are well ahead with their ploughing this year. Sports.—The girls’ hockey team of the Lumsden School came over last Friday afternoon,' and were defeated by 2 goals to nil.— A trial match, Waikaia v. Rlversdale and Wendon, took place on the latter's grounds last Saturday, and attracted a number of enthusiasts from here. The game was keenly contested, and resulted in a win for the combined team by 2 goals to I.—There were no football fixtures last Saturday, but a team of 10 from Balfour Rifle Club visited Waikaia, and engaged in a friendly match on the local range. The match resulted in Waikaia’s favour by a margin of 21 points. Football Dance.—The members of the Football Club tendered a complimentary dance to Messrs A. S. Lee and E. Hamer, jun., who have been chosen as members of the sub-union’s touring team. A large number attended. Mr T. Mitchell, president of the club, congratulated the guests on their success, and presented to each a cheque. Mr William Christie also spoke. The recipients suitably responded. Mining.—The official opening of the King Solomon mine took place on Wednesday afternoon. After Mr Petman, chairman of directors, had said a few words, afternoon tea was provided, and enjoyed by all. About a dozen cars and charabancs conveyed the visitors up Winding Creek to the mine. OTAUTAU. July 25. —The twenty-fourth annual meeting of the Wallace A. and P. Association was held in the secretary’s office' on Friday last, when the -president (Mr F. J. Collie) presided over a good attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman thanked his fellow-directors for the assistance received, and paid, a tribute to the work of the secretary (Mr G. H. Hodges), who had worked untiringly in the interests of the association. As a result of the year's operations they had slightly more than held their own financially, but the weather on show day had greatly affected the attendance. They had reduced the loan to the Permanent Investment Association by £32 10s. During the year £l2 had been spent on a special unloading gangway, and £ll on concrete work. The unloading bank had proved a great boon to exhibitors, and. should assist in entries being received from a distance. A general discussion took place, special mention being made of the considerable saving to the association through the ladies running the luncheon booth, after which the report and balance sheet were adopted. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year : —President, Mr J. G. Johnston ; vice-president, Mr J. M. Lindsay; directors— Messrs W. R. Ayson, W. Kennedy, J. M. Lindsay, J. Muir, D. M'Gregor, T. Norman, J. B. Purdue, J. R. Reidie, J. C. Millar, William Smellie,,H. M’Leod, and A. J. Officer; treasurer, Mr Hodges ; auditor, Mr Porteous ; delegate to Southland Association, Mr D. Teviotdale. It was decided to fall into line with other associations and pay Is per member towards the cost of financing the tour of the visitors from Canterbury. The date of the annual show was fixed for Wed-- • nesday, November 28, and it was resolved to hold a ball on the evening of the show. Directors' meetings are to be held on the second. Friday in the month. Ratepayers' Meeting.—There was a splen-' aid response to the request of the chairman

Of the River Board to hold az'meeting to consider the proposal to borrow £3550 for river improvements, over 20 members of No., 2 subdivision pu.tting in an appearance on Friday evening, while several members of the board were also present. The chairman, of the River Board (Mr John Smith) presided, and, after expressing pleasure at the large attendance and explaining the object of the meeting, called on the clerk to outline the position. Mr Fisher supplied the details, and a general discussion took place, it being eventually decided that it be a recommendation to the board that a re-classification of the district be made In respect to this loan. A meeting of the board members present was held, and It was decided that the request could not be agreed to. A vote of thanks to the board for explaining the position terminated the meeting.
