RAILWAY TO TAUPO.
EXTENSION FROM ROTORUA. PREFERABLE TO ROAD TRANSPORT. WELLINGTON, June 28. The Government has decided to extend the railway line from Rotorua to Taupo. The Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates) states that he has ..been guided in the decision by the necessity of opening up further areas of Crown lands, as shown by experience with fertilisers on land of the second and third- class, and by the results of research work. A further consideration is that in about five years the Forestry Department will require transportation for its timber.
Two commissions have reported in favour of the railway, but the question of a road was also considered, and again the balance was in favour of the rail. The work will be put in hand at once, and a number of men transferred from the East Coast line/” . -
