THE VANISHING RABBIT.

AUCKLAND, June 27. In regard to a statement made in Christchurch by a member of Selwyn Plantations Board that in 10 years there would be no rabbits in New Zealand a member of the staff of the Department of Agriculture stated this morning that the two rabbit boards in the Auckland district were doing excellent work. The Wairoro Board employed a man constantly, but lately he had reported that on his rounds it" was not uncommon to see only five or six rabbits a week. Similarly conditions also prevailed in the Waikato district and in the King country. He said that rseehtly he motored throu°'li the Kino Country to New Plymouth/ and in dis°tricts where rabbits once abounded on the roads scarcely any were to be seen. In the Waiuku district . towards the coast rabbits were still fairly plentiful in sandy and clay country, but strychnine mixed with carrots or oats was proving an efficacious method of keeping them down. ° As in the South Island, good trapping ■blocks are difficult ,to get, although in the Morrinsville district it is stated that good cheques are being made by those prepared to work hard, some making from £lO to £l2 a- week by trapping and' poisoning. ■/:
