TOUR DE FRANCE.

A NEW ZEALAND COMPETITOR.

WELLINGTON, June 15. Thq Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates) has forwarded the following cablegram to Harry Watson, the New Zealand cyclist who is to take part in the Tour de France (an international cycling event) in France at the week-end: “Best wishes from New Zealand for success in the forthcoming contest. Kia Ora. Coates, Prime Minister.”

The Tour de France is the biggest cycling race in the world, being contested over 3338 miles spread over 22 sections. The race starts on June 17, and finishes in Paris on July 15. Watson is the New Zealand member of the team of Australians and New Zealanders which left for France early in March, the Australians being H. Opperman (captain), E. Bainbridge and P. Osborn, all of Victoria. The success of the riders will depend on how they can adapt themselves to Continental conditions and practices, for the style of long distance cycle racing on the Continent is very different from that in Australia and New Zealand and elsewhere. To have any chance of success the riders win have to alter their whole style of riding and start out on totally different lines.
