During the course of his remarks at the Blenheim farmers’ dinner the other evening Mr W. J. Girling. M.P., referred to Marlborough’s greatest need. as more population (reports the Marlborough Express. In the course of a' witty reply, Mr Rod O’Connor, one of the visitors, delivered himself of what appeared at first to be a technical leeturette on live stock. The burden of his argument was that the stock which one picked up at the sales was rarely equal to that “ grown on the property.” Then he swung suddenly to a reminiscence of the late Mr R. J. Seddon, with his slogan “ Keen the cradles full.” “ That,” said Mr O’Connor, “ is my advice to Marlborough and to New Zealand generally. The stock which you pick up. —the surplus population of other lands—is not equal to that grown on the property. Keep the cradles full, and you will not have to worry about filling up your vacant acres with a strong and virila manhood.”
