PLUNKET SOCIETY.

The month’}- meeting of the committee of the Royal No. 2 Society for the Health of Women and Children was held on Friday morning, when there were present— Mrs Joseph M’George (in the chair), Lady Allen, Mesdames J. C. M’George, Cairney, Arundel, T. H. Carr, Wilson, Williams, Miss Nina Reid, and the secretary.

I The Matron of the Karitane-Harris Hospital reported as follows for month I ended April 30, 1928: —Number of pati- ' ents admitted during month: Mothers 12, i babies 18—total 30; number of patients ! discharged during month—Mothers 11, I babies 16 —total 27; number of paeients i in residence on April 30 —Mothers 3, 1 babies 25—total 28; largest number in | resident on any one ’ day—Mothers 4, I babies 27 —total 31; number of deaths— I Babies 2 —total 2. All babies are makI ing satisfactory progress. The babies who died were premature twins who died a few hours after admission. Sources of admission. One mother and baby were admitted from Ravensbourne, one from Kaitangata, one from Cromwell, one from Gisborne, and one from Hopetoon (Australia). and seven mothers and babies w r ere admitted from the city and suburbs. One baby was admitted from Cromwell, and five froni the city and suburbs. Staff: The following nurses commenced their course of Plunket training:—Nurses Macdonald, Lockwood, Grant, Gedney, BentJ iam > Tapr« Till, Bayrose, Cunningham, Wood, Arnott, Runciman. White, Davey, Sutherland, Francis. Nurses Graham and Humphries commenced their course of Karitane training. The following nurses finished their course of Plunket training:—Nurses Frances, Benn, Warneke, Doward, Astley, Davie, Musgrave, Stevenson, Hawkes, Thomas, Burnett Samson, Harris, Willocks, Ellis, Philpotts, Shepherd, Carmichael. The following nurses finished their course of Karitane training:—Nurses Thomson, Graham, Macauley, and Chambers. Visitors: There. were 175 visitors during the month. Gifts: Gifts were received from- Mesdames Fairbairn M'George. Gibson, J A. Johnstone and Miss Fitzgibbon. Apart from the usual mending, a quantity of knitted jumpers have been made by the staff.

The Plunket nurses for North and Central Dunedin districts reported as follows for month of April:—Number of babies on the list, 664; number of babies breast-fed (including partly), 230; number of new cases for the month (babies only), 34; number of new cases, babies breast-fed (including partly), 27; number of new cases expectant mothers, 7; number of visits paid to homes, 461. Number of visits paid to Plunket rooms: Stuart street—Mothers 272, babies 202 older children 24—total 498; Mornington Mothers 31, babies 30, older children 4 —total 65; Roslyn—Mothers 72, babies 66, Older children 22—total 160; out-pati-ents’ department. Public Hospital— Mothers 7, babies 4, older children 3— total 14; Kelsey-Yaralla Kindergarten— Mothers 63, babies 46, older children 20 —total 129; number of bottles of humanised milk sent out from Taieri Dairy 2204. ’
