AUCKLAND’S CIVIC SQUARE.
ITS SALE REPORTED. AUCKLAND, May 16. Auckland’s unsightly Civic square is to undergo a radical change in the near future. Negotiations which have been going on for some time for the acquisition of a considerable portion of land on the Queen street and Wellesley street frontages for the construction of a large block of buildings, embracing a modern theatre, have been practically completed.Questioned this morning in regard- to the matter, the Mayor (Mr G. Baildon) said he hoped in the course of a day or wo to be able to announce that the ■ity Council had disposed of a very large' □ortion of the Civic square. He was inable, he said, to give any details as to who were the interested parties. Mr Baildon did not deny when directly asked that a prominent theatre proprietor was interested. r ■ It is understood plans have been prepared for a theatre, which will cost" £lOO,OOO and seat 3000 people. Provision will be made for 28 shops.
