LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION.
The council of the League of Nations’ Union, which met on Tuesday had several interesting matters on the agenda. In view of a resolution passed by the annual meeting on the motion of Mr A. Barn, the council bad to consider the best method to promote the active participation of members in discussion and debates on the work of the League of Nations—meeting in which the public generally could share. After discussion this was referred io a sub-committee composed of ihe Rev. H. E. Bellhouse, Messrs A. Burn, I. M. Bates, M.A., 11. K. Wilkinic n and Miss Rosevear. Remits for the approaching conference in Wellington ware submitted and accepted as follows: — That the New Zealand Government infi rm the British Cabinet of willingness t<; sign the optional clause of the statute o; the Permanent Court of International Justice. This clause assures that international disputes of a judiciary’ character shall be submitted to the court. The British Cabinet states that the conpent of all the dominions is a necessity’ before the clause can be signed. Other nations—Trance, Germany, Belgium, and Italy—have agreed to sign when Great Britain will consent, and the two first have already signed the clause. Such action on the part of the British Cabinet would be evidence of her good faith in relation to arbitration. The council also urged direct representation at the annual conference of the International Labour Office. It was announced that members of the branch are eligible to attend the conference in Wellington, and information may be obtained at the office in Jamieson Building.
