SAMOA.
STATEMENT BY MR COATES. WELLINGTON, May 10. That New Zealand intends to retain the administration of Samoa was made clear by the Prime Minister in the course of an address to a gathering held under the auspices of the Junior Reform League. He said the Mau was at present arranging to make its representations before the Mandates Commission in the hope that the latter would give it what it wanted—“ Samoa for Samoans.” Such a proposal would lead to bloodshed and absolute chaos, as far as Samoa was concerned. Only by a European administration was it possible to have peace in Samoa. New Zealand would not relinquish the administration there. Its object was to have peace, law, and order, and no alteration would be made until this had been achieved. “We are not using force,” he said. “ That is the last thing. We are trying to persuade the Samoan th:\ he has everything to thank the Administration for, and that by passive resistance he is only making trouble for himself and everyone else.”
