During the Educational Institute’s discussion upon the departmental regulations newly made about leave of absence and pay, one delegate asked Mr A. Bell, the Assistant Director of Education, who was explaining these regulations, what the department made out of the change? '• I do not wish to resent anything said here,” replied Mr Bell, “ but I do resent a question like that. The department is not out to make anything, but to do what is equitable for the teacher,” a reply which was received with applause. At the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce complaints were made that outside warehouses and retail firms who operated in Wanganui did not support the local chamber (says the Herald). “They skim the cream from the town,” said a member, “ and do not give anything in return.” He considered the least outside firms could do was to become members of the Chamber of Commerce.
