MAIN SOUTH ROAD.

GREEN ISLAND TO TATERI FERRY. Motorists will no doubt welcome the definite steps that are now being taken in connection with the “ Better roads scheme,” which is soon to be put into operation on the Main South road through the Taieri County. At a special meeting of the Taieri County Council yesterday afternoon, this matter was brought to finality. Under the preferential treatment adopted by the Main Highways Board in respect to certain lengths adjacent to the more populous centres, proposals by the board for the reconstruction of the Main South road through the Taieri County woT-n adonted bv the Council. The work will involve an expenditure of over £60.000, and will include improvements to the alignments and grades, together with a reconstruction of the road formation with a heavy coat of suitable metal, finished off with a bituminous surface coat. The work will be undertaken bv the board and will cover a period of three or four vears for completion. The Otago 'Motor Club, it will be remembered. took tho initiative j n this matter, and though its plans did pot eventuate. credit is due to that bodv for the initial -<teps taken in a “better roads scheme.” There was a full attendance of the council, and Cr James W. Blair presided. The vote on the adoption of the proposal was unanimous
