CHRISTCHURCH TO DUNEDIN. SLEEPING CAR ON NIGHT TRAIN. CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. A proposal that a sleeping car should be attached to the night express goods train between Christchurch and Dunedin was made by Mr V. E. Hamilton at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr Hamilton expressed the opinion that such an innovotion would be a great benefit to business men of the two cities. The only extra expense would be the cost of a sleeping car and the wages of one attendant. At the present time, in order to do one day’s business in Dunedin, a Christchurch man had to spend one day getting there and one day getting back. His proposal would eliminate this loss of time. The President (Mr C. P. Agar) said he understood the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce intendedto take action in the matter, and probably it would be approaching the Canterbury Chamber for support, AUCKLAND TO DUNEDIN. CHRISTCHURCH,'May 8. At a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce the Transport Committee reported that proposals from the Auckland Chamber to the effect that an endeavour should be made to speed up the mails between Auckland and Dunedin had been thoroughly examined. In the course of the inquiries the committee had received valuable assistance from representatives of the Railway Department, the Postal Department, and the Union Company, In the opinion of tho committee the Auckland proposals were not practicable. It would not be in the best interests of the commercial community or the general public to run a daylight ferrv service between Lyttelton and Wellington.
The report of the committee was adopted, and it was decided to forward a copy to the Auckland Chamber.
