SALE OF ROSEVALE FRIESIANS
HIGH AVERAGE PRICES OBTAINED. At the annual sale of surplus stock from the famous Rosevale herd of Friesian cattle conducted on behalf of Messrs H. R or th and sons, of Omimi, Otago, on Thursday by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Go., Ltd., there was a splendid attendance of both local and distant breeders, and a spirited sale resulted. The top price of the day was 107£gns, which was paid for the two-year-old heifer, Rosevale Inka Triumph, the purchaser being Mr T. Gleeson. Pukekohe, Auckland. Rosevale Queen Sylvia Triumph, the dam. of this fine heifer, was paraded m the ring at the commencement of the sale, when it was announced that up to the end of April she had produced under test, approximately 10001 b of butter-fat. Cheers greeted the announcement, and the owners and breeders, Messrs North and Sons, were warmly congratulated on this splendid performance. Triumph being the first cow of any breed in the South Island,, to make a four figure butter-fat record. It was also stated that this cow had a further 28 days to go before her record is completed, and, as she is milking over 501 b daily and her last test was 4.57 per cent., the performance she will be credited with should approximate 10601 b of butter-fat—a great record. This remarkable cow produced 9861 b butter-fat last year, and will become the first cow in the Dominion to have produced 20001 b of butter-fat in two successive seasons Mr R. H. Dickie, of Mataura, paid the second highest price of the day, 70gns, for RosevaJe Sylvia Keyes Inka, a two-year old heifer from the same family as the sire of the 10001 b butter-fat cow. She was also one of the best-looking animals brought forward. Another, fine heifer was Rosevale Daisy Verbelle Posch, which was secured b v Mr B. Richards, of Tuata pcre, for 621gns. Her dam Regina Posch ofi the South, is a splendid cow, Which, rather remarkably, was bred by the auctioneer, Mr C. E. 'Robertson, fomerly a breeder in Southland. She is under test, and gives promises of making a rescrd -of 7501 b butter-fat.. Another half dozen head realised 50vns apiece or over. Competition was well sustained for the yearling heifers. Mn R G H Robertson of Otautau, secured an out. standing heifer in Rosevale Model Sylvia Echo, by the popular, but now defunct C imported sire, Echo Svlvia Sir Griselda, ■ * or .. the 5°P P lice of 54gns. This fine heifer is also a direct -, descendant in female line from that great imported cow, Burkeyje Sylvia Posch, whose descendants are now scattered throughout the length and breadth of New Zealand -'s well as Australia. Another good yearling heifer, for which competition was keen" was-Rosevale Sylvia Nancy Posch, "a linebred descendant of Burkeyje Sylvia Posch. She was secured at 50gns by. Mr G. A Neill, Tolago Bay, Ndrth ’lsland. This breeder., was a considerable purchaser. Top price for the few. yearling bulls catalogued was 52gns for Rosevale Eqlio Korn dyke Keyes paid by Mr G. Low, of Otautau, who is an old patron of this herd. Ilis bull was from the Triumph family also. The solidity of the sale is indicated by the fact that the average for the full catalogue was 42 2-3gns. This is the second successful sale of Friesian cattle held this week, and the prices paid indicate how firmly established in the favour of dairymen is the black-and-white breed. Messrs U. North and Sons have every reason to be gratified with this further tribute to their renowned herd, which has now produced cows and heifers whose records show the notable average of 625.481 b butterfat for 103 performances made under test. This herd is a great advertisement to the pro-
vi.ice and an asset to the dairying industry of the Dominion. It was announced at the sale that Messrs North and Sons, continuing their progressive policy, were now importing from America a halfbrother to the world’s champion three-ycar-old heifer, which has a butterfat record of 11751 b, and also represents a great show-ring winning and well-uddered family- of producers. Mr J. P. Kalaugher, secretary of the Friesian Association of New Zealand, was present at the sale, and in the morning gave a demonstration on sever-ai of the cows in the Rosevale herd, and also made a number of interesting announcements relative to the progress of the breed. The approximate averages noted for stock sold were as follows: — Twelve two-year-old heifers averaged 46|gns. Thirteen yearling heifers averaged 39igns. Five yearling bulls averaged 37gns.
