COLUMBA COLLEGE.
THIRTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT. The following annual report of Columba College for the year 1927 was submitted at the meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery on Tuesday:— The total number on the school register for 1927 is 213 (primary 106, secondary 10.). There are a few vacancies in the school house which, it is believed, will be filled as soon as the financial position of the country improves. The health of the pupils has been uniformly good. The board recently appointed Dr Borrie as medical officer of the college. This is a new departure, that will be welcomed by parents generally. Miss Bell has taken the position vacated by Miss Beggs, who has been appointed to the staff of the Girls’ High School, Christchurch. Miss Bell resides at the college. Miss Wilson has joined the staff of the junior school. Miss M'Gill succeeds Miss Kilpatrick, who has undertaken a responsible position in Invercargill. Mrs M'Donald, after rendering faithful service for some years in the primary department, has resigned. During the year it was found necessary to reorganise the adminPstration of the school home. In this the board was assisted by a Ladies’ Committee, which acted in an advisory capacity. The church is indebted to Miss Mollison and Miss Helen Mollison, who rendered valuable service. Reference should be made also to the services of Miss R. Jolly and Mrs Waters. Religious instruction forms are an important part of the school curriculum. Apart from the daily devotional exercises and the memorising of Scripture, classes are held for Bible study. All this work is the personal concern of the principal. The Rev. A. C. W. Standage, the college chaplain, addresses the pupils on the second Wednesday of each month. There were 21 church communicants in the scho'cfl—home, six joining during the year. The Columba Old Girls’ Association is becoming an important adjunct to the life of the college, and the ties that hind its members to Columba are becoming stronger each year. A scholarship of £l5 was awarded to Miss Greta Stevenson, and £lO was awarded to Miss Lorna Chance, who has entered on the course ■of study preparatory for matriculation. Columba has maintained the traditions of former years in athletic contests with sister colleges.. Miss K. Miller established records for swimming for Australia and New Zealand, and has been selected as a candidate for the Olympic Games, which are to be held at Amsterdam this year.
