Mr Frank R. Bushell, for eight years general manager of the Farmers’ Cooperative Wholesale Federation (NewZealand), Limited, has accepted a position with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., as overseas trade organiser. Mr Bushell’s ultimate location in the company’s service will be London.
The Rev. D. C. Bates, formerly director of the Meteorological Office of New Zealand, has, at the invitation of the Bishop of Christchurch, taken temporary charge of the parish of Ashburton. The vacancy was caused by the death of the Rev. Franklyn Wiseman. Mr Arthur W. Alloo, -who has severed his connection of 14 years with the Macandrew Road School to take up the appointment of first assistant in the Albany Street Associated Normal School, was met by his colleagues on the teaching staff on the 30th ult. and presented with a travelling rug. The presentation was made by the headmaster (Mr John Bowie), who stressed the good work done by Mr Alloo under both Mr G. W. C. Macdonald and himself. Mr Alloo had been a very conscientious and successful class teacher, and a most enthusiastic and successful games coach. He had earned the esteem of every member of the staff, and would take with him their heartiest congratulations and best wishes. On behalf of the assistants, Mr A. H. Robinson conveyed to Mr Alloo their hearty felicitations,. and assured him of the high esteem in which he was held by all. Miss Murray, Miss Pilkington (ex-mistress of the school), Mr Morgan, and Mr George (woodwork instructor) endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers. At the meeting of Macandrew Road School householders held in the evening, it was resolved to send Mr Alloo a letter expressing the householders’ appreciation of his services, both in school and in coaching the pupils in their sports. , ' , W. J. Branch, M.Sc. (Auckland), has been appointed to the position of secondary assistant at the Riverton District High School. Mr Branch will take up his duties on May 10. , Frank Burke has been transferred to Christchurch as foreman of works in the Railways Department. Mr J. M. Dwyer, of VVaimate has been appointed to the staff of the local Magistrate’s Court.
’lhe Education Board has made the following appointments Miss C. A. W. Ferguson, sole teacher, Kakapuaka; Miss F- Speeden, assistant, Beaumont; Miss L. M. M‘Callum, infant mistress, North-East Valley. Dr E. F. D’Ath, who for the past four years has occupied the position of clinical pathologist of the Medical School at the Otago University, has accepted the position of pathologist to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, and lecturer in pathology to the University of Sydney. He intends to leave Dunedin in about two months’ time.
Mr Jack Hunter Main, solicitor, of Oamaru, was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court on Wednesday by his Honor Mr Justice Sim.
Mr J. H. A. M’Phee left Dunedin by Thursday’s express for the north. He will leave New Zealand shortly on an extended visit to the United States and England.
The Rev. Mr Ewart, who has been transferred from Mosgiel to Bluff, was, at a valedictory social given in his honour by the congregation of St. Mark’s Church, Green Island, presented with a well-filled, wallet, the presentation carrying with it the best wishes of the congre gation for Mr Ewart’s success in his new sphere of activities. Mr Ewart suitably replied. Intimation -was received on Thursday by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society that Mr A. F. Roberts,'" of Fairnilee, GalsBhiels, Scotland, had been made an honorary Royal Scottish academician, an honour which is much coveted. Although Roberts is 1300 miles from Dunedin he has been a staunch supporter of the Dunedin Art Gallery for many years. In addition to presenting a number of works of great value, including those fine pictures “The Quoiters ” and “The White Cockatoo,” he has on a number of occasions acted as adviser to the society in the matter of purchases. His advice has always been sound, and has been warmly appreciated by the council of the society. It was unanimously decided that a letter of congratulation from the society- should be sent to Mr Roberts. The Rev. C. N. Luker has been offered and has accepted the charge of the parochial district of Waikouaiti.
Miss 0. M. Percy, of Alexandra, has been appointed first assistant of the Seaward Downs School.
The following delegates have left for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institutei,—Hes,sll G T. palmer, A. J. Woods, W. F. Abel, L. Forrester, L. F. de Berry T. Begg, W. Rodger, and J. P. Hawke.
The choir of the Kaikorai Presbyterian Church visited the home of Mr and Mrs Bert Rawlinson at Tainui on Thursday evening, and Miss J. Duff, one of ths original members, on behalf of the choir, presented Mr Rawlinson with an oak clock. Mr Rawlinson has resigned the position of conductor, which he has held for nine years. Miss Duff expressed the regret of the members at his resignation, and said that it had always been a pleasure to sing under his direction. The visits to other districts had .Jso been very successful both socially and musically. Mr Rawlinson thanked the choir for its felicitations, and paid a tribute to its loyalty anri high quality of its singing.
Mr J. W. Smith, LL.B., has been admitted as a partner in the firm of Messrs Reid and Lemon.
Mr A. T. Blyth, secretary to the firm of Messrs A. and T. Burt, Ltd., has retired from the service of the firm. Sir Walter Stringer (chairman of the War Pensions Appeal Board), accompanied by Lady Stringer and his secretary (Mr H. G- Aekins), left for Christchurch on Saturday morning.
Mr A. C. Heron, chief Lloyd’s surveyor for Australia and New Zealand, who has been supervising the survey of the damaged whaler, C. A. Larsen, left for Wellington on Saturday morning, en route to Sydney.
Mr Alexander Burt, of Auckland (chairman and managing director of Messrs A. •nd T. Burt, Ltd.), arrived in Dunedin last Thursday on a business visit, and will later proceed to Invercargill, accompanied by Mr J. H. Johnson, the firm’s general manager. Mr George Groves, who is leaving the firm of Messrs J. Mill and Co. at Port Chalmers after 30 years' service, was presented on Saturday by his fellow-em-ployees with a wallet in recognition of their goodwill. The recipient suitably replied.
Mr Thomas Henry Blythe, solicitor, of London, has been appointed by Sir Charles Skerrett, Chief Justice of New Zealand, as Commissioner of the New Zealand Supreme Court in England for the purpose of administering oaths, and other legal work. The pupils of the Girls’ High School assembled last Thursday afternoon for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr Paget Gale, who has resigned his position of singing master in the school. On behalf of the pupils one of the girls presented Mr Gale with a watch, suitably inscribed, as a mark of appreciation. On Friday Mr A. Lewis, first assistant master of the Fendalton School (Christchurch), who has been appointed headmaster of the Pine Hill School, Dunedin, was presented with a handsome travelling case by the pupils and staff. Colonel A. E. Stewart, C.M.G., D. 5.0.. of Milton, will preside at the reunion smoke concert of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade to be held in Christchurch on May 16. Mr P. J. M'Cawe, who has occupied the position of head accountant at Messrs A. and T. Burt’s Wellington branch for the past 14 years, has been appointed secretary to the company in succession to Mr A. T. Blyth. He will take up his duties in Dunedin as secretary and as assistant to the firm’s new general manager (Mr J. H. Johnson) about the middle of next month. Dunedin is Mr M'Cawe’s home town.
The Rev. M. W. P. Lascelles, secretary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, is a passenger by the Niagara for Vancouver. Mr Lascelles will represent New Zealand at the Baptist World Conference.at Toronto in June. The Rev. W. S. Rollings will act as secretary of the Baptist Union during Mr Lascelles’s absence.
