No better example of the spirit of peace and. good-will could have been given than the action of a German lady in Wellington the other day, in handing to the secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association a magnificent wreath to be placed on. the cenotaph (reports the Dominion). Speaking in broken English and refusing to disclose her identity, she asked that the floral tribute be accepted “in remembrance of the honoured dead.” A borough by-election at Pahiatua, caused by the resignation of Mr Daniel Moriarty, resulted in Mr F. G. Bourke being returned by one vote—Bourke 205, Moriarty 204. Mr Bourke was a member of a previous council Mr Moriarty had resigned his seat as a protest against the action of the Works Committee in. letting a small contract. More than half the electors did not vote.
