“ I have at times, during the last few years, examined the diet scale of many of the hospitals, and I know of no other hospital of our size which has as liberal a diet scale as we have,” reported the secretary at a recent meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board (says the Manawatu Evening Standard). “This is more especially so since the revised diet scale was brought into force about 12 months ago. We are, of course, fortunate in having our own milk supply, but it must be pointed out that, even when we charge the milk up at Is per gallon for most of the year and Is 3d for the winter months, the farm still shows a substantial profit.” Mr Harry Locker, of Patea, who recently visited Auckland, has been a resident of Southern Taranaki for over 60 years. He remembered he bombardment in 1866 of Hukatere by the big guns of the troops under the command of Major Noake, who died in Auckland not many years ago (reports the Star). The grand old Maori chief, Taurua, and many of his followers were arrested at the time and sent to Dunedin to gaol. Mr Locker, who may well be described as an “ old-timer,” is the greatest surviving authority of the early history of Southern Taranaki, and his mind is a storehouse of incidents connected with the early days.
